What do you know about trashcan theft?
08/31/2012 6:50 AM by John M
It was stolen once after the trash people came last Thursday, but they’ve stolen our replacement one today […] I’m just wanting to know if anyone else is experiencing this and if there’s extra 709 trash bins hanging around the hill. A pick up truck with four or five trash bins was seen by my neighbor today.
TAGGED: question
Mine has been stolen twice over the last year. My landlord painted the address on the latest one in 3 foot high numbers and letters. This seems to have worked
I have had my trash cans switched, stolen, brought back, and just about everything else. I’ve been cleaning out a lot of the junk I own lately and put it in my alley and it’s gone in a matter of hours. Even had a guy come by and tear apart an old mattress for the metal springs, I just made him promise to put all the cloth/padding in the trash. hah!
I’ve had mine stolen twice
Ours got stolen a while ago, along with both of our neighbors. It’s ridiculous. My partner wants to paint the replacement bright pink.
Document license plates/Call RPD if you see pickup trucks driving around with multiple trashcans.
we had one stolen last week as well.
Weird – my neighbor and I were out this morning counting our alley’s trashcans and noted that the trash guys are not emptying them all – or someone is coming by and dumpiing their trash after pickup, and that we are missing two trash cans. I called 311 and ordered 2 more. I’m thinking of doing a little street art on ours…
Are they metal or plastic trash cans? People will steal anything metal that is easily accessible, so I would suggest switching to a plastic can if that is the case. Otherwise, I wonder why trash cans are such a hot item?
From NBC Los Angeles: 02/23/12
Trash bins on the street can be a smelly eyesore, but for some thieves they emit the sweet aroma of money.
The LA County Sheriff’s Department is reporting a rise in the theft of plastic trash bins. The reason?
“They take them to the grinding factories to the recycling places and sell them illegally,” said Lt. James Wolak. “They are grinded down and sold to the black market.”
Thieves can get about 30 cents a pound for the plastic. A thief can make $9 on a trash bin weighing 30 pounds, detectives said.
In the past six months, Wolak’s department has recovered $4 million in stolen plastic.
To deter thieves, he suggests marking your bin with your name or address. Then if police see bins on the back of a truck, they can identify the owner.
druggies with addications will do anything for money. Welcome to the ghetto.

From the report “In the past six months, Wolak’s department has recovered $4 million in stolen plastic”
Whole or ground up If ground up how do they know if it was illegal plastic or even trash cans? And how do the owners of stolen property “recover” ?
I’m not sure it’s anything that elaborate here. More likely it’s just folks who want to avoid paying the city $70 for an extra trashcan in a lot of cases.
ok, I’m making a stencil to spray on our blocks’ city approved/issued plastic trash cans that says “Stolen from xxxx block.” And now that it was mentioned, I did see a pickup truck this week with lots of used city trash cans.
They can steal a broken one from behind my house. The trash trucks have run over three of mine in the last year. Each time I call, they drop a replacement off.
My neighbor had hers stolen, so I noticed a ton of them down in Fulton at the drinking hole. I took pictures and contacted DPU with no response. If you are looking for yours, start there! There are almost 15 of them in that park area.
