Church building leaning precariously over Q Street
09/09/2012 7:02 PM by John M
The church at 2700 Q Street apparently took another beating during a recent storm. Heard that wtvr was out there on Saturday, but nothing has shown up on their website.
we drove by yesterday before the cops got there, before the street was closed. crazy. what is the deal with this place? i see less than a month ago a rehab plan was approved. is this under construction, is that why the roof is missing?
Church Hill road closed because of unsafe church

It looks like the church needs a new construction team. Looking at the pics here….this job could not be executed more poorly than this. What did they think would hold this wall up? Holy cow…It won’t take much of a breeze to bring this one down.
The building inspector should be out there pronto!
Oh man… this is horrible in many ways including the way the “so called” contractors have left the building exposed this way. It almost looks like they were hoping for a total failure (insurance?). From what I see there is little by way or shoring the walls and can come down at any moment. Did the roof cave in with the last storm? Was the steeple removed before this?
Eric, they’ve been taking it down little by little for the last two weeks. They first removed the slate roofing, then the boards and a-frames last week, and the steeple a few days ago. Yesterday they were smashing out the windows.
Don’t sneeze!
Church renovation forces neighbor out of home

It’s interesting to compare the city’s treatment of this situation with a church to its treatment of a nearby brick home under similar circumstances not many years ago. The roof of the house was removed in preparation for a new roof and further renovation and the city demolished the house in less than 24 hours. And even had that structure fallen/collapsed, there were no nearby neighbors to be forced to move out. So capricious!
Hope this building makes it through the night.
Does Mount Calvery still own this Church? I used to attend this church every so often as a teen. It was a refuge for me back then and I shall never forget some of the most inspiring messages I’ve received when attending. That was in the late 70’s – early 80’s. It is so sad.
It’s owned by Spirit of God Ministries International now: http://www.spiritofgodministries.org/pages.asp?pageid=103926
