Good words for Anthony’s

Jon and Leah Nelson review Anthony’s for richmond.com:
Taking over the Church Hill spot at the corner of 29th and Broad streets, Anthony’s on the Hill quickly earned buzz from the community for its combination of fresh pies and comfort pasta dishes. Every neighborhood needs its local pizza joint, and Anthony’s handily fills that need for Church Hill.

I love the vegetarian and my companion loves the all meat – so they make up a half and half. Great, and only one of the things that keep us coming back and back and back. See you there!
totally agree w/ the reviewer: food is great! but, ambiance needs work. maybe soften the lighting (small fixtures at eye level/table level do wonders,) add some interesting music, and eclectic art on the walls, we’ll want to eat-in rather than take-out. Check out how Tio Pablo does it in the Bottom…that place uses paper plates & plastic dinner ware–and the furniture is very simple. But, food & ambiance (art/music/decor) are so cool, we eat-in every time–and take friends.
Churchhillian, Kelly Fitzgerald, did a great post showcasing Anthony’s pizza capabilities. She joined him to make one for her blog, AustenHill: http://www.austenhill.com/2012/09/pizza-on-hill.html
JaHB, I could not agree with you more on all your observations. The space needs to be seriously cozied up.
First of all, Anthony made a donation to the 7th District’s National Night Out event. So he is definitely a good fit for the Church Hill Neighborhood. Second, I took a friend to eat there and we LOVED IT! The food was great and Anthony and the wait staff doted on us the entire time we were there. That as well as a few other touches made our visit a very pleasurable experience. I take that over ambiance any day.
the waitress brought my delicious caesar salad out to my car where i was waiting for it….now she didn’t have to do that!!!
My boyfriend and I love this place! The owner, is a fantastic guy and he is always there, making sure his customers are well taken care of. The food is fresh and tastes great, and it’s obvious that a lot of care and pride go into making every item on the menu. They have some great wine selections too, and we have often popped in there just to grab a good bottle to take home. So glad this little gem is catching peoples’ attention so quickly.
Please get anchovies.
Dining Out Review: Anthony’s on the Hill

I’m probably the pickiest restaurant goer I know. If we go to a new restaurant and I sort of like maybe one thing out of the entire experience, that is a success. So Anthony’s was quite a revelation for me. From the garlic bread (never had any like it before) to the salad (dressing was so good) to the pizza (now I get the hype around SausageCraft) I loved every single last part of everything I ate. The staff was super nice and I take it mostly all family. The only thing I would change, is with food that good and a staff that friendly, it is a place I could see visiting regularly for a drink, so I wish they had a bar to sit at.
