Fatal shooting on Q Street
10/11/2012 6:35 AM by John M
Richmond Police are investigating a fatal shooting in the 2600 block of Q street. They say that one man is confirmed dead and another woman has life threatening injuries.
According to a spokesperson for the Richmond Police Department, officers in the area heard gun shots around 11 p.m. When they arrived to the scene, officers found two people that had been shot outside of a residence.
This is the area’s 8th killing in 2012 and the 37th for Richmond. Last year at this time, the East End had already seen 10 killings, while Richmond had only had 29 homicides by October 2011.
Totally heard this last night. Gunshots first then 5 min later cops. I’m on 27th.
I heard these shots last night and now knowing where it was located I’m wondering why it took 10-15 mins before I heard sirens.
This happened four doors down from me. My kids friends lives in the house the victims were at…bullets tore through the house. I can only imagine what those poor kids are going through. My heart and condolence goes to the victims family
I missed this one but I was also watching a WWII movie then so probably didn’t hear the difference. I did hear the ones at 3:00am the other night which sounded like on our street.
heard 6 or 7 shots…one block from the police station.
way to go.
I heard this. Called 911 and they told me it was probably just fireworks and hung up.
Max, that just plain sucks swamp water. Tell them next time you are not paying their salary to “assume” anything but to come and investigate!
Richmond Police detectives are looking for a dark-colored mid-size, four-door vehicle with tinted windows similar to a Dodge Intrepid that was seen leaving the area of last night’s homicide.
Detectives have also identified last night’s homicide victim as Rodney J. Shelton, 18, of the 3200 block of Q Street, and.
At approximately 11 p.m. Wednesday, officers in the 2600 block of Q Street heard gunshot and found Shelton shot to death outside a residence and a 19-year-old female suffering from a critical gunshot wound.
She was taken to the hospital and is now in stable condition.
Detectives are currently following up on several leads, and ask anyone with any information about this crime to call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000 or text Crime Stoppers at 274637, using the key word “ITip” followed by your tip. Both methods are anonymous.
At #6: PLEASE pass that on to the Division of Emergency Communications at the RPD! I had issues with a 911 call before and wish I had thought to do the same thing. When the non emergency line rang off the hook one night I wrote them a terse email and they actually launched an investigation. If you reach out to them, they WILL take steps to fix the problem!
I could actually hear 2-3 ricochets whiz past my window, we are 2 houses down.
I have personally now observed 5 shootings this year on the corner of 27th and Q. The last four the police all said are “unrelated incidents.” And I’m not home all that much, its completely reasonable to think there could be 10 shootings from that corner this year. There have also been a handful of fist fights and very loud verbal arguments at that intersection. Clearly something is going on in one of those houses at that corner. I told the police last time I called them about a fight that if they don’t do something someone will die at 27th and Q, they told me call them back when people are phsyically assaulting one another, verbal arguments aren’t “fights” they respond to. And now a 18 year old has lost his life at the very spot.
@Max – I sent an email to the email that you posted with your comment. If you don’t get that, drop me a line at murden@gmail.com.
This leaves me pining for the whole petanque courts kerfuffle.
Am I wrong, or did somebody mention on some other thread that kids play ball at the intersection of 26th or 27th and Q? Aren’t there kids in danger if there’s so much gunplay in the area?
I’d hate for a kid’s death to be the thing that gets everyone’s attention on the issue. Well, anyone’s death, you get my point.
Oh boy. Need to clarify BIG TIME.
I posted that response quickly late this morning while taking a study break. I need to clarify my comment because the call I made to 911 was last winter (not sure of the month), NOT last night. Last winter I heard what I thought were gunshots and called 911. I was told they were probably fireworks and the operator quickly hung up and the call was done with. This was in the winter, though not around any Christmas or New Years, and I only heard these sounds for 20 seconds so I was confused but trusted that the operator was telling me the truth. I do not know if my call was followed up on. In retrospect, I should have contacted the Richmond PD to express my concern, but I didn’t think about it at the time. My second sentence in the post should have started with “This past winter I had..”). If I had known that what I had posted was what I had typed I would have made a correction.
For the record, I did hear the shots, but figured they were fireworks by the same people that set off fireworks the previous night at 27th and Leigh (http://chpn.net/news/2012/10/10/shots-in-the-night_24507/).
Ziti – that was me that mentioned the kids. You are correct a group of about ten kids ranging from around ages 5 to 12 regularly play basketball in the street about 15 feet from this shooting.
I heard these from M Street. Sounded like 5-7 shots were taken. I also remember hearing a very similar sound which may have been a single gunshot aproximately 20-30 minutes prior.
Lots of posts about folks saying what they heaed but not many or any from those same folks stating how disgusted they are that this sort of thing goes on in their neighborhood. I’m sure you are but always find it amazing how people post how they heard gunshots almost like it’s no big deal or they are just so used to it that it doesn’t really matter. I for one am fed up, hince why I’m moving. It’s sad for Church Hill. For every good that people try to do to make it a better place, there is this sort of daily activity that continues to bring it down.
Gus, thank the city officials in part for the problems with their lackadaisical attitudes towards bettering neighborhoods.
#16, Maybe people are posting what they know as a way to share information and awareness? I’m not sure how complaining and stating that you’re leaving is any more productive. Clearly no one is here to post how excited they were to hear violent crimes occur. I am sad to see people feel they need to flee Church Hill, but I hope you are replaced by someone who is actually interested in building a community instead of just settling in to one.
Yeah, ridiculous, it is mindbending that folks in CH just accept that bullets flying around is OK, cos, you could live in the West End and not experience city living, WHAT, so accepting gunshots, murder is just part of the CH experience? I wish they would not label the #$7^ parts of CH as CH.
@2- The sirens you heard 10-15 minutes later were most likely the ambulance leaving the scene. The news reported that officers in the area actually heard the gunfire and were on scene in seconds. EMS only enters the scene once PD tells them it is clear to enter (in other words the shooting has stopped). So let’s assume that may have taken another coulple of minutes. Im pretty sure that eye witnesses would report the area flooded with blue and red lights very quickly.
@ Gus. I don’t blame you for moving. Why risk the well being of your family and yourself to try to “change” Church Hill. People move here for the urban experience, then are appauled when they get it. Fact of life: There are good neighborhoods and bad ones.
One generation of well to do people will not turn several generations of crime and violence around. (especially not in this economy) I understand that it is mostly the well to do’s that post on here so I am sure you are going to rip me apart. But it’s just my opinion which I beileve I am deserved.
Chris – if any of us were looking to settle into an established pristine neighboring none of us would have moved here, so I don’t think that comparison is fair. I am all for putting in the time, work, money and effort to make it a better place just like many others, and I do that regularly. However I’m not going to stay if I perceive my efforts to be a waste of time, and I have yet to get even the slightest ray of hope that there is a effort to make things better except for vague reactionary statements from the city that are never backed up with an actual policy or funding. So far my biggest issue is crime, and the feeling I get from the police and the city is that my efforts are completely wasted. At the scene of Wednesday’s shooting I was watching the press agent for the RPD talk about how the city needs the community’s help and is seeking their information, so then why did I get blown off by three officers when I approached them with possible suspect information? Especially in a neighborhood where the Stop Snitching movement is rampant, it is totally unacceptable to do anything other than stop the presses and bend over backwards when someone approaches an officer and says they have information about a possible murder suspect. You can blame the people talking about leaving all you want, but I would just say some of us are realistic enough to understand when something is a lost cause.
Again, #22, Anon: Please report that sort of thing to the 1st Precinct Lieutenant. That isn’t acceptable and if you bring it forward (and pass along the info you wanted to) then it will only help matters!
@17 – you’re being charitable with “lackadaisical.”
#22 – I don’t know why you got “blown off”. Better not to second guess and just make sure the RPD gets the info you have. There are many ways to do that: call RPD directly and ask for the lead homicide detective on this case, call Crimestoppers, or call or email 1st Precinct Lt. Minton directly (his contact info is listed on the RPD web site). I think you have a responsibility to follow up.
Lucky – I eventually spoke to Chief Norwood directly to give my information because I was determined I would not leave the scene without someone listening to me.
You go Anon!! Good work.
