Bon Secours expansion to close 27th Street

Another feature of the deal is the expansion of the health system’s Richmond Community Hospital on North 28th Street […] “The city will support the closure of 27th Street and the purchase of additional lots by the Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority, providing the acreage required for future expansion of Richmond Community Hospital,” Bernard’s letter says.
It would be a shame if 27th street was closed. One would think that the city government would have learned the consequences of closing streets from all of the mistakes in Jackson Ward and Court End. I dont understand why this project can’t continue without the closure of the street.
I’m going to assume that they mean the portion of 27th Street that is closest to Nine Mile Road, which actually is right behind the existing hospital. I double checked google maps and did a street view.
Aren’t they also building a wellness and fitness center? Will this just be for employees or for the greater community? At one point I heard there might be a YMCA built here. I wold love closer access to a fitness center.
A similar street closure happened at the Jefferson Hotel. Businesses want to take over thru streets and the city is up for sale. At what point will this end? When Richmond is a cut up maze of streets? Let the hospital build an enclosed bridge over the street connecting the hospital and its expansion and keep the road open to the public!
This is great news! I know the folks at Bon Secours have put a lot of thought into this process and selected the 27th street expansion strategically in order to minimize potentially negative effects. This is going to be a very good thing for the hospital, its patients, and the Church Hill community.
Wasn’t Bon Secours one of the organizers/sponsors of the East End charrette? I’d think they are planning to implement what they saw as opportunity based on the charrette’s findings. Odd that it’s coming about through a Redskins training camp.
#6 bozatwork, I agree with you, I can’t remmeber what their status was at the charette but they definitely had a presence. And #3 urbanpioneer, I hope the fitness center involves the general public, that would make a lot of sense.
