ABC hearing set for 25th Street Deli
10/25/2012 7:12 AM by John M
There will be a hearing on October 31 at 9AM to determine whether an ABC license will be issued to 25th Street Deli.
The owners of the 25th Street Deli also operate the relatively new Fairfield Mini Mart at 1601 Mechanicsville Turnpike.
The map below shows active corner stores (blue) and inactive corner stores (yellow) within a 1/2 mile or so of the 25th Street Deli (green star).
The density of ABC-off licenses at crappy convenience stores in the greater Church Hill area is one of the arguments against this store getting it’s license.
Add 4 stores w/ ABC-off licenses to the map above: Blue Wheeler, the 30th street store (x from Chimbo School), the store x from MLK middle school (fairmount & mosby) and the Shockoe Bottom Market on 18th st x from Jefferson Park. Oh, and the biggest nasty of them all: the ABC store on Venable.
If store owners would just do 1) a better job of cleaning up the area around their stores and discourage public consumption/trash/negative behavior and 2) stick to their promises (always made at the hearings–but never acted upon) to stock healthy fresh food, we wouldn’t be opposed to an off-license.
The crappy gigs/40’s/lotto/chips/candy stores are an easy-money business model for people who don’t live in our neighborhood and simply want to pimp us out. Fighting the license may seem an obtuse way of effecting change, but right now, it’s the best (most effective) option we have.
agreed! I have lived on the same block as the Blue Wheeler for over 3 years. In 3 weeks, we will be moving. I’m sure you can only imagine what goes on there at the corner and it’s all because of the store. I don’t have enought energy or space to go into details. They are all operated by incompetent owners who care nothing about the area but just want to make money. Factor in a bunch of owners/renters on the surrounding blocks who also don’t care(a few do) and it’s all just down hill from there. Good luck and too bad it’s too hard to take away an ABC license.
@Hillbilly, I don’t know who you are, but you are speaking the truth! I hope you will show up to oppose this license on the 31st. I agree it’s a less than perfect means of effecting change, but it’s all we have in these instances.
Please also send your objections via e-mail as soon as possible to ABC Agent Anthony Jimenez at anthony.jimenez@abc.virginia.gov
How many crappy, dirty convenience stores does that intersection need? They corner just seems to be a magnet for loiterers and litter.
Have you all ever actually been in the 25th Street Deli? It’s bright and clean inside, and I know the store owner sweeps the sidewalk out front. I know these stores get lumped together in people’s minds, but try actually visiting an individual store before dismissing it out of hand. Corner markets are very handy in a neighborhood like ours, and I think we should support the nicer ones like this one.
I agree that corner markets are handy – I will even go as far as to say they are a necessity in this kind of neighborhood. But once you give them that license, there’s no going back and that’s not fair to the residents. I’d yank the Blue Wheelers ABC lisence in a heartbeat, if I could. For every one decent customer who goes there and buys beer, there are 30 more that are criminals, panhandlers, drug dealer and/or loiterers.
@6…so you now have changed your mind about the Blue Wheeler? Not long ago, I referred to the Wheeler as a cancer on the neighborhood. You were so quick to come to their defense. Interesting. The place is a freaking dump that will not allow that area to ever improve beyond where it is because of that hole. As a neighbor who has a vested interest in what surrounds you, you should be the first in line to be railing against that pit of a business. It’s a dump and should be shut down. Seems like you’re coming around…it need to go.
Where is the BW going to go Laura? There are no legal means with which to shut it down. You can’t just say “go away” because they are the ball and chain dragging down this part of CH. They have every right to be the total shit hole that they are currently. BTW, the BW has changed ownership since I defended them previously. I did have hope. It’s not so much me ‘coming around’ as it is that we’ve sunk in to a new deeper hole.
@9 keep up the pressure on them. call the cops, code enforcement, the mayor. you and your neighbors can wear them down and make them want to “go away”. If you make it easy for them to be the shit hole they are…they’ll remain.
ABC Hearing scheduled for tomorrow has been delayed. Applicant’s attorney has requested a continuance.
Ann – Who is the applicant’s attorney?
