Fatal accident on Mosby Street
From the Richmond Police Department:
A single vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Mosby and O streets this morning, resulting in two fatalities.
At approximately 1:23 a.m., a vehicle was attempting to make a left turn off of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge onto Mosby Street when the vehicle collided with a light pole at the corner of Mosby and O streets. The light pole fell to the pavement as the vehicle struck a tree, continued several more feet down O Street and came to rest against another tree.
The passenger, Michael T. Overton, 51, of the 1900 block of Carrington Road, was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.
The driver, Keith D. Fordham, 52, of the 00 block of East Broad Street, was also ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to VCU Medical Center where he died from his injuries.
The 900 block of Mosby Street was closed just north of the viaduct, and the 1800 block of O Street was also closed to traffic to accommodate the investigation. All roads closed for the crash investigation were re-opened by 5 a.m.
Sad news, and condolences to the family members.
How fast could they possibly have been going across the bridge that they would manage to fatally wipe out when attempting a left hand turn at the end? Notably, both victims were ejected from the vehicle. It’s hard to imagine that seat belts wouldn’t have saved both lives.
