Help plant trees in Chimborazo this Saturday and Sunday
Join the Richmond Tree Stewards and Church Hill neighbors this weekend as they plant fruit and nut trees at Chimborazo Park.
The main planting will be this Sunday, November 4th from 1-5PM:
Help make this project a reality that will provide sustenance and delight to wildlife and park visitors for years to come!
Wear work clothes, boots, gloves and bring your shovels, garden rakes, and pruning shears if you’ve got them. Meet at the dog park parking lot.
The city has started digging the holes, but we’ll need to do a little digging too. We’ll be planting apples, blueberries, figs, persimmons, filberts and much more!
Additional volunteers are being sought for hole digging duty on Saturday and Sunday:
This Sunday is the first planting day for the trees we bought for Chimborazo Park. Unfortunately, the city crew that was supposed to be digging the holes in advance of planting suffered a equipment failure and left the task unfinished. So, volunteers are being sought to help dig holes. We will work Saturday starting at 1PM and Sunday starting at 10AM, The volunteers will be meeting up around the dog park. Look for the woman in the orange work vest.
We realize this is short notice, but the city was unable to live up to its commitment. If the holes arent dug, the trees cant be planted.
Do you need me to bring a shovel or post hole diggers?
I was down there last night with my dog. There are some holes dug. Not sure how many. I don’t remember seeing any holes after I got past the spring.
Yes, bring a shovel if you have one. We are trying to rent an auger as we still have lots of holes – over 100 to dig for use this Sunday and next Sunday. All are past the spring and up the slopes. At this moment we have to move forward expecting to dig the rest of these holes our selves. Luckily the ground is moist… but rocky.
Over 22 volunteers planted over 80 plants today and dug the remaining holes necessary to plant 60+ more trees next Sunday, November 11 (1 to 5pm) AND we started clearing the two walking paths that have become overgrown on the side of Chimborazo Hill!
It was an amazing day. We had folks from a neighborhood church bring us water. Dog walkers stopped and helped dig holes. Many folks using the lower park came up and said Thank You. The plants look great and we are going to start working up the hill as we remove the Tree of Heaven invasive plants.
Please come help next Sunday (1 to 5)!!! Bring the kids.
