Another package theft
11/20/2012 8:02 AM by John M
My birthday present was stolen from my porch this afternoon. The USPS package has a lot of sentimental value, and its contents are in a language that not too many people will understand. My neighbors saw the man wearing a khaki jumpsuit grab my package and leave on his bike with blue wheels toward 26th and Marshall from 28th. 🙁 If you can help, please do!
TAGGED: crime
Someone should fill an old pc box with dog poop and leave it out to see if it gets stolen
I really dislike that USPS leaves packages on the porch, as though they don’t know this kind of stuff happens. As much as I hate that Fedex comes at inconvenient times, at least I know if it ends up in the southside facility, I’ll get it. UPS is the best, though, especially Mike. He looks out for everyone, and makes sure they get their package.
In all honesty, I think we had a package stolen, because we were supposed to have received it a week ago. It was likely shipped USPS.
It’s a shame the Unabomber is no longer active. It would be good if we could order up a few of his special creations for these creeps.
I learned the hard way at Nolde (two packages stolen, including a netbook and a Xmas present from my mother) to have all packages delivered to work. Unfortunately not an option for everyone.
We put a “packages here, please” sign under our mailbox (which is in an alcove on the porch, out of sight from the street).
Does it work? Absolutely not. Instead, USPS usually puts boxes right under our front door which anyone can see from the street. Ahhhh! Very frustrating. Not sure what else to do.
We just had a package stolen from our front porch on Broad between 30th and 31st. They took the small package but left the box filled with 56 lb of dog food. They obviously opened the box, and decided it wasn’t worth taking. Since the dogs still have food (which of course leads to poop), maybe we will try out Human Honey Badger’s plan.
I think I had a package taken today too. Marshall between 29 and 30th. I hope they enjoy my book: Wreaths for All Seasons by James Farmer.
I think whoever is responsible must be observing the mail man because usually my packages are not left in plain sight.
Would be interesting to set up a sting operation!
I agree with Aud. put a fake package on the porch and put a camera in the window 🙂 If we really want to get technical, put an iPhone in the box and track it.
I agree. With the package theif and the bus stop bandit. The only problem is that there is already pretty good video of the package theif and no one knows who he is. Maybe he’s not from the ‘hood?? He could be following random UPS trucks into neighborhoods.
Seems like it should be pretty easy police work to shadow the delivery truck for a few days. Another basic tactic that unfortunately is probably beyond the basic speed trap and driving around repertoire of our city’s cops.
On the positive side, with mail theft being a federal crime, a “stiff” sentence awaits the punk doing this…

I found my UPS package at the bottom of my steps today soaked from the rain. It looked like someone had opened it up and closed it again. Not much of interest in there so nothing was taken. Seems like this package thief is keeping busy.
I haven’t had a package theft since last Fall when my awesome Twilight Struggle game was stolen until this week (Tuesday) when some a@@#%#%hole stole my prescription glasses from my front porch. Warby Parker is being awesome and resending a new pair, but seriously jerks, stop stealing stuff. Reporting to RPD, watch out good people of Church Hill.
I really think the shippers need to address this problem. I would like the option of delivering my mail to the local Post Office (USPS) or local Kinkos (FedEx). However, the stores that I buy from online will not deliver the package to any other address besides my home or work. I cannot get packages delivered to work and I only a mail slot at home. This is a real gap in service if you ask me. I rarely buy anything online anymore because I am so worried it will be stolen.
@Amy – sooner or later they’ll learn that you have the most boring packages ever and leave you alone… 😉
Folks around here should start putting dogshit and notes that say “get a life loser” in amazon boxes on their front porches.
I think the pipe bomb idea that was also brought up earlier on one of these threads is another good idea but I’m not sure of the legality of that one. It’s well deserved but probably would get someone in trouble.
Package stealers are real lowlifes. Lower than regular thieves because not only are you stealing something but a.) it’s something that person has probably been eagerly awaiting and b.) it’s probably not all that appropriate for the thief (as Amy’s post demonstrates).
@Alex- seriously I get baby products, anthropology books, household products, geeky games, and stuff like glasses. I never order stuff that can be fenced. Honestly, back off package thieves
I need to redact my package theft announcement. Apparently the UPS person stashed my box between the cushion and back of my porch rocker. Sorry for unnecessary CHPN whinging!
I have started having packages sent to my sister’s house – especially during the Christmas season. During the year, I am usually home so it’s not too bad but we did have a package taken during the Christmas season so not taking any chances!
