Man in critical condition after shooting in Mosby
12/24/2012 9:33 AM by John M
Man in critical condition after Mosby Court shooting:
Police were called at 1:49 a.m. to the 1300 block of Coalter Street, first for a report of a person shot and then for reports of random gunfire, and the first officers on scene found the victim outside an apartment building near the Little Page Street intersection, Naoroz said.
There have been 8 killings in the East End so far in 2012. If this sticks, it will be the lowest body count in the area in at least a decade, and more likely since at least the late 1960s. At it’s likely worst, there were 41 people killed in the East End in 1993, followed by 34 in 1994.
can we get an overview and comparison of gun violence statistics for the area…or just violent crime comparisons to previous years?
I have to agree that while homicides may have been low…it sure felt like a particularly violent year.
And wait…is Gus talking about all of the East End or just the Mosby area? I walk in Church Hill at night all the time. The majority of the violence appears to be in the peripheral areas of the East End (north and east) and not as often in the south and western areas of the neighborhood.
Yes!
Back in August, I pulled together the numbers from 2000 through Aug 2012 (66% of the way through 2012) for assaults, shootings, and homicides (thanks to the RPD for making that happen).
Short answer: “Before 2008, combined sectors 111 and 113 (basically “The East End”) averaged 68 shootings and 20 homicides per year. From 2008-2011, they averaged 39 shootings and 12 killings per year.”

Thanks John! So…overall…violent crime is down. Some days, it doesn’t feel like it.
