Our biggest stories in 2012

The big story in 2012 was Church Hill becoming the best fed neighborhood in Richmond. The Roosevelt was awarded the Elby for Best New Restaurant by Richmond Magazine in January and named Restaurant of the Year by Style Weekly in March. Word broke in June that Dutch and Co. was coming. Anthony’s on the Hill opened up to great reviews in July.

Back in September there were 5 places on the horizon: WPA Bakery, Proper Pie, Sub Rosa, and Johnson’s Southern Comfort have all opened since.

One of the more surprisingly high-trafficked posts was January’s look at Cameron Holmes’ true map of Richmond.

Back in May, Church Hill was named to a list of “10 Great Neighborhoods for Childless Adults”.

In June, there was a ruckus about the petanque courts at Chimbo playground.

An August piece echoing desire for a better grocery store took off for a while, as well as a more recent look at the service at CVS.

Also in August: New construction on Broad Street

From September: it is a miracle that this church is still standing.

Not surprisingly, a few crime stories picked up a bunch of traffic along the way:

• Brick-hurling teens rampage on R Street
• Mugging, masturbating in local parks
• It is legal to shoot your guns on your own property

Speaking of crime, so far only 8 people have been killed in the East End in 2012. If this holds, it will be the lowest count since at least 1998 (and more likely since at least the early 1960s). Fully half of the killings in the area happened in a 14 day span at the end of September.
