Johnson’s Southern Comfort now open for lunch and dinner
01/02/2013 6:03 PM by John M
The long-awaited Johnson’s Southern Comfort is now open for lunch and dinner everyday at 2306 Jefferson Avenue. They are running a limited menu as they get up to speed. Check’em out!
Was by for dinner recently. The place was empty–just one other couple dining in. Service was good, but the kitchen was uneven. Took forever to get the food out. My dining companion’s entree finally came out, but mine didn’t join it for about another 5-10 minutes with no explanation. The very long hair in my companion’s mac & cheese was unappetizing–no one in the kitchen was wearing hair nets or hats that I could see. The lemonade tasted as if it may have been stirred with a dirty spoon or in a dirty pitcher since it had an odd flavor of something other than just lemonade in a couple of the servings. .
This week they are going to their “full” menu–evidently when we ate there, the menu was “limited.” But if you have trouble pushing out the food on the limited menu for a very small number of diners, expanding the repertoire is the last thing you need to do.
I loved the food at OMG and I want them to do well here. Not giving up on the place by any means and will try it again in a week or two, but was underwhelmed by this experience. I hope things come together quickly for them.
You really gotta give a new restaurant at least a month to shake out service details.
The $7 black & blue burger & fries gets my two thumbs up. And the sweet tea, too.
Totally agree….which is why I said I am not giving up on the place. But given the problems while dealing with only a few patrons, I think they need to do a lot of shaking to get ready for prime time.
I’m so happy for Johnson’s I’m a returning customer from the old business OMG i had outta town visitors from Macon GA over for the holidays they wanted to grab something to eat that was nearby in the neighborhood I went OMG to see the sign on the door we was saddened at first until a young lady walked by and said the new location is on Jefferson to drive around the corner it absolutely gorgeous in there i ordered the blknd talapia with a side of mac ummm umm good i tell you these people must sprinkle fairy dust in their food my family loved the food and the service so much they’re planning my grandmothers 90th luncheon there thumbs up to Johnsons!!!!
Who would have that many gross problems with the food and service and then go back?
Passing by the old OMG there wasn’t a line waiting outside for people to get in so I wonder if the very locals that did frequent, will follow them to this new place. I am glad they advertise comfort food but they need to expand on that to actually include classic comfort foods like meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, battered fried chicken, smothered steak, deep-fried veal cutlets, liver and onions, etc…
SMzdt76, I assume your comment was aimed towards me. There are two reasons why I will go back. First, I had eaten at OMG previously and had some great food. It could be this was simply an aberration as they shake out a new location. Second, assuming it shakes out well, as I hope it will, I want this place to succeed as much as I want any restaurant or business that is not a sleazy, dirty convenience store in Church Hill to succeed. Solid businesses like good restaurants give the neighborhood a powerful shot in the arm, but they can only be solid if they get our support–assuming of course that the place is good to begin with. We need Johnson’s to succeed as we begin to build a restaurant row worth visiting along Jefferson Avenue, and if giving it another chance is the price of that, I’m more than willing to pay it.
Brett, we still need a convenience store locally. The Check-Mart which preceeded Buzzy’s was NOT a model representation of a convenience store and fits your description.
Eric:
Over on my end of the Hill we have a couple of convenience stores. Ocean Grocery. The one a block east of Johnson’s on Jefferson. A couple of others. While I would be glad for a new, proper, clean and safe one, my fear is we would get another one of these dumps.
I’m hoping to try it soon. I’m a bit worried that they haven’t adopted some of the social media tactics that the other Church Hill businesses have adopted.
I Visited Johnson’s Sunday it was a nice size crowd even though i don’t go for the crowd thingy i never been the follow the leader type but i stopped by to try the food because a Co-worker of mine or should i say Co-workers speak highly of this place they mentioned it was the best soul food that they have ran across in a while ….so i figured I’ll go by and try it I was seated and i ordered the Meatloaf smothered in gravy and onion’s with mash potatoes and steamed cabbage it was awesome omg the mash potatoes was cooked fresh not what i was expecting and the cabbage was seasoned perfectly not too little not too much and the meatloaf was the best if mom read this she would choke me she thinks she makes the best but after tasting Johnson’s I’m HOOKED @Eric S.huffstutler they do have all of the above what you’ve mention now i’m just waiting on the ABC license so i can have a nice cold beer with that Oyster Po’Boy keep the good work up Johnson’s I will be returning!
