Vacant house burns twice on 30th Street
01/08/2013 7:59 AM by John M
Firefighters responded to fires twice last night at the abandoned house at 1120 North 30th Street, first just after 9PM and again just after 3AM.
I wondered what was going on with all of the sirens I heard last night.
Sounds a bit suspicious to me. Once wasn’t enough… like someone wanted that house gone (insurance?)
There is a vacant house on our block (29th/E Grace) that the landlord has left a small electical fan running and the windows open for approximately 3 and half months (yes, mindboggling)….These actions were done back in the early fall to help dry up a water leak that neighbors noticed and reported. It appears the owner does not give a #*&% about his property. in the meantime…..should a concerned citizen call the fire department about this obvious fire risk, or who would folks suggest?
Concerned, I’d call the building inspector if the windows are open. Hmm, 29th and Grace? I pass by there often, I’ll have to look because it isn’t ringing any bells right now. Phone book says to call 311 but I know from experience that I can’t get that number from here at work – try 646-0999, work through the menu and get an actual human being to answer.
If you don’t get any joy from that call, try also the fire department at 24th and Broad at 646-4229 and see what they say.
The house is at 2821 E Grace, the tiny electric fan has been running for aproximately 3 months (no joke!), the front window remains open, place has not been occuipied for at least 4 years……..
Concerned, thanks for the address. I will try to make some calls next week, will post back if I get any results. Is this the house that used to be painted pink? Tell me it’s not the one on the south east corner, that one was fully restored years ago.
The pink house was next door and also sported awful metal awnings.
I have been in Church Hill for 5 years and find it very disturbing that there are, what appears so many abandoned houses on my street; E Grace, I can count at least 7 that have never been occupied. why do these landlords/owners sit on thes properties, not sell them or rehab for rent?
