Shots fired into house on 27th Street
02/12/2013 12:23 PM by John M
This morning as I was waking up, 2 shots were fired into my home. I’m ok, and the cats are ok, but it sure rattled me. Sector 111 Patrolman Ziolkowski told me that there was a chase that involved people that had a personal dispute and that it was NOT random and that there were multiple calls around 7:45a.m. of the shooting.
If anyone else knows anything about it, it would ease my fears about my house being shot at. Here’s the news link
Glad you’re okay! I heard shots being fired west of 24th at 4:30 this morning. People need to calm down.
What block?
I’m so glad to know that you and your animals okay. But this happening in our neighborhood is NOT okay. I live on 27th street and heard the shots this morning, when I was getting out of the shower. I believe I heard at least 6 shots. I also heard the intercom at George Mason issuing a code red, which I’m assuming means the people who fired these shots weren’t in police custody.
Do we have a neighborhood watch?
I heard what I thought was a series of shots this morning (I live a few blocks away and they sounded close) as I was getting ready for work. They seemed to be in rapid sequence and I thought there was no way people were shooting that early in the morning. Guess I was wrong!!
The 27th St area (up to the 1000 block, anyway) is usually pretty quiet but between this and the robbery in the alley of the 800 block, things seem to be a bit off lately. Any work from the police department about why were seeing an increase in incidents?
When they say not random, do they mean that this house was shot at intentionally? If not, then it was random. Scary.
Sorry to hear that happened to you. I’m just a few doors down on your block and left my house at 7:45, must have just missed it. Glad no one was hurt, but its such a commonplace occurrance in church hill eventually someone is going to get struck by a stray.
Hello! Will you please give me a call…804-912-3926… this is Kelly Avellino from NBC 12. Thanks!
I would not call if I were you: no need to participate in generating hysterics for the evening news.
Ugh. I live in the 800 block. This is some bad shit. I have moments when I think “I wonder if that might happen here.. I hope I’m upstairs if it does…” And low and behold, it happens right next door practically. I didn’t hear anything this morning tho, but it may have been what woke me up cuz that’s about the time I came to this morning.
I agree with 11. If you do call, the news will skew it in some way or another to make it look like there is a violent drug crazed gang war going on throughout the Hill.
A couple of years ago, someone called them about dogs off leash and before you knew it a story ran about packs of wild dingos carrying off small children. Sometimes the Weekly WOrld News is more responsible than our local journalist
Problem with not calling the news is that it’s already ON the news. The link in the article above goes to Channel 8, WRIC news.
Don’t call the news. Just pretend it never happened. Or, call the news and have some light shed on a problem that has existed for decades and will continue to. Your call. It’s sad that the out of sight out of mind mentality rules here.
TV News will definitely try to bend it to their purposes, but it is hard see how more sensationalist this can be than the truth. Having shots fired into your house is no small matter. It’s a fine line between reaction and overreaction. No doubt the news reflects badly on the neighborhood, but I don’t think suppressing the news is the answer. The real question is, How do you push back the chaos without pushback from civil liberty groups, or can you?
How would the news sensationalize this? To anyone outside of the very immediate area it is the tiniest of news stories and no one would care the least bit, it would be a 30 second blurb. But the fact that you don’t want it to be reported just shows the attitude that so many people want to live in their pretty corner of church hill and pretend that they don’t live next to a very troubled area, or don’t even want those areas to be called church hill. But I’m sure the second someone hits a car mirror or parks in a no parking zone or pants a house a non-historically accurate color the same people will be demanding the personal tragedy they experienced be covered by 60 minutes. Pathetic.
I will never give an interview with the local news again. About 7 years ago during the shockoe bottom baseball debate I gave an interview to NBC 12 and they chopped it up to make me look like a racist. They are dirty and looking to make a scene.
I’m on the 800 block and thats Insane!!
Bret, I live at O Street. I’ve endured death threats, chased a shooter on foot, hit the floor on more than one drive by, and “donated” a few thousand dollars in personal property to the neighborhood. I’ve also been witness to more humbling kindness, transformative power, and undeserved grace in seven years than many people get to experience in a lifetime. Please be mindful that your rush to bourgeois stereotypes are as unhelpful as race based ones.
Houdon – I apologize for the insulting stereotyping. Its just extremely disappointing whenever there is a “someone shot on so and so street” post and so many of the replies seem to be “that’s technically not Church Hill” or “don’t spread this news around, people shouldn’t associate crime with church hill” rather than an acknowledgement that a terrible thing happened and it is in our community whether an invisible census tract boundary seperates the poster from the crime scene. However I see posts about Dominion putting a pole too close to someone’s house and there are immediate calls for justice all around. Without proper context or background your suggestion to keep this out of the news appeared consistent with that attitude in my eyes. I completely agree that the news can take an issue and twist or sensationalize it, but given the number of crimes that happen in and around Richmond I just think there is zero threat that this minor in the grand scheme of things shooting would turn into some overblown media slander of CH. I mean i think they did about 12 seconds on the kid that got murdered at 26th and Q the other month, so I see no reason to keep this away from the news if they are taking an interest in covering it.
I am so sad to admit that I am one if the ones to have recently moved to the suburbs bc of things like this. You can insult me if you like, call me a west ender, mock me for not being able to hack it….but after 5 years on the hill, I knew it was just never going to get any better than it is now. I’m sad; I loved living in the city, I really did. But it’s getting out of hand in the hill, and it just isn’t worth it anymore.
It *is* getting out of hand! If one more bakery opens up, I might just die of immediate fatness.
Yeah, someone hasn’t been here very long. The neighborhood has come a long way and is a TON safer than it used to be.
I have to agree with john_m and Daniel. I have lived in Church Hill for eleven years and the improvements since then are nothing short of astounding. We now have a grocery store, pharmacy, coffee shop, restaurants, bakeries out the ying yang, and countless homes renovated to their former glory. We have a uniquely diverse neighborhood. We have creative artists as neighbors and chefs. Do we still have a bit of an edge? Yes, thank goodness. Do we still have typical inner city challenges? Yes. Should we apologize or feel ashamed about that? No! We are all trying to to make this place better by being part of the solution. Be proud Church Hill!
Thanks John for giving me a little laugh for the day! And I fully agree with you, Daniel and Michael. This is a great place to live!
I love your point of view on this Michael. My family has lived in Church Hill since before it was called Church Hill. Some of the older members struggle with the rampant gentrification. however they are excited to see the growth. ifwe continue this, we will all be a part of the change, and we will hopefully pull the community and its people upwiththe change. crime exist everywhere. I always share thatwhat everyou’re running from . is waiting for you when you get there. Sincethat is so, makewhere you are the best place for you and yours. Be the change you want to see. with people like youinvesting in “the hill” it will become a greater place.
Tyron, you’ve got me curious. What was it called before Church Hill?
@25 Relatively low crime, increasing infrastructure repair, efficient police enforcement, innovative businesses, involved neighbors, and bottomless charm are driving me out of this neighborhood, too!
