Get an exclusive sneak-peek of the Better Housing Coalition’s latest affordable housing project for low-income seniors, under construction on North 28th Street in Richmond’s Church Hill neighborhood. This seven-unit, net-zero energy-capable apartment building utilizes the latest in green technology and is scheduled to open later this month. It compliments a 32-unit, EarthCraft-certified seniors apartment building across the street, also underway.

The aim, according to BHC’s Construction Projects Manager Jeff Reynolds, is for the building to generate as much energy as the residents will use. This will be accomplished via the six solar panels and 71 photo-voltaic (PV) panels on the roof, which will heat the water and meet the demand for all electricity .

Other features in the seven-unit building include energy-efficient windows, EnergyStar appliances, low-flow water fixtures and ductless, highly efficient heat pumps called mini-splits.
