Police chase, maybe shots fired near Ocean Grocery last night?
04/16/2013 6:50 AM by John M
Posted last night on the CHPN Facebook:
Anyone know whats happening in Church Hill tonight? Looked like a police chase around the First Precinct/Ocean’s Grocery. Possibly shots fired, we heard several right after the chase went by our house. Police plane overhead…
The RTD has a report about “a pursuit that spanned two jurisdictions and resulted in damages to five vehicles” which ended at Nine Mile Road and Laburnum Avenue which is likely related.
I could swear I heard shots around 11/1130ish last night near the 27th St park, but wasn’t sure. Anyone else hear anything in that area?
I heard them too. I saw a police car drive down 25th(ish) then about 6 shots fired.
We were almost hit by the driver when he ran through the red light at Ocean’s Grocery doing like 80 mph just as we turned onto 25th. Just as we lost sight of the driver and police were converging on where he last turned we heard 5+ shots ring out from where he was, I was sure he was firing at the cops or vice-versa but no mention of it in the report. Could have been celebritory gunfire from spectators excited by the chase. Nine Mile was lined with people, including women with babies screaming cussing at all cops that passed by, really sad/pathetic to witness.
My guess is it was this story:

I am thinking the people were cheering because the citizen caught the suspect. And I doubt it was celebratory gun fire over a police chase!! That whole comment is really messed up. What in the world type of people do you think live here?
@5-“What in the world type of people do you think live here? ”
Well, let’s see…in that neck of the woods…murderers, gang bangers, addicts, bums, thieves…and so on.
@edg – when women are out at 10:30 PM standing in the street of a busy intersection as police cars speed past holding their 6 month old babies screaming “F@ck you b*tch a$$ cops!!!” I don’t think there can be any confusion as to what they are saying no matter how big of an optimist you are. The comment wasn’t messed up, it is merely me relaying actual facts. And to answer your question I think we live in a world with a mix of good and bad people, or good people that make really bad choices, that’s how it is everywhere so I don’t see why so many think you can’t say a bad word about CH, we’ve got good stuff and we’ve got bad stuff and we should talk about it all. And as to the gunfire, it was either A) the suspect engaging in a shoot out with the police which they just decided to let slide and didn’t bother to mention in the report, B) a completely unrelated shooting incident that happened in the general location of the chase as it went by, which is a big coincidence but given the area not totally impossible or C) someone watching someone getting away from the police and popping off a few rounds in excitement, have you ever been here for New Year’s Eve? Given the anti-police feeling so many have, seeing someone giving about 20 cop cars hell and getting away would certainly be way more reason to celebrate than new years eve.
@7…Well said. I can’t stand the bleeding hearts that make excuses for the bad behavior demonstrated by some of the folks in this neighborhood. They constantly make bad choices and there are those that will try to make excuses and justify their lack of education, role model, parental guidance, the school system….BULL! Blame them and make them ACCOUNTABLE!
Bret and Laura,
I have to agree with you both. Well said!
Those are over-generalizations. And very sad and divisive.
@10 Care to elaborate on that comment?
@edg, just because you choose to drink the cool aid doesn’t mean we all do. If you’d like to continue defending people who yell at police officers, (there is no reaching someone like you). I have worked with inner-city problems for years, and have seen first hand how dedicated most of the deadbeats (sorry bad word) fine upstanding citizens are to promoting a positive lifestyle. 🙂
I think all edg was saying was that not everyone up there is like this. Some were probably inside ashamed of their neighbors. Nobody’s denying there’s still a ton of knuckleheads up that way as far as I can see.
I have lived, worked with, been friends with, attended school with, been neighbors with, and basically been apart of inner city family life for over 25 years and I stand by my comments. My kids are friends with these family’s kids and most all of the folks here are working class people trying to get by. Yes, there are some bad seeds, but you have grossly misrepresented the area.
Disturbed,
in what capacity have you worked with inner-city issues? You sound like somebody in law enforcement. Edg, I’m with you & am glad to know many others who agree.
