Anyone obtained stormwater credits from the city?
04/20/2013 6:13 PM by John M
Do you know of anyone who has obtained credits from the City for ‘harvesting rainwater’? There is a provision for it but I would like to know how hard it is to accomplish.
TAGGED: question
I successfully obtained a 25% credit for the two rain barrels at my home (completed 2 years ago). Applying was easy, just had to fill out the application and turn in photos of the rain barrels.
It was actually easier than I thought and happened quickly!!!!
#2 billymutter, I’ve got the same problem. Got a letter from DMV in late Feb. that they won’t renew my decals for my license plates in May until I pay personal property taxes on my car. Called the city as I’ve not had a bill but they sent my account to collections instead of sending me a bill. In person to both collection agency and city hall six weeks ago, promised a quick resolution by a supervisor in city hall and still waiting for resolution. If you have not had a bill, your account could well also be in collections.
As to storm water credits, I can’t even get them to call me back to explain what a small condo complex needs to do to get credit. Left voice mails, never a return call. If MarianeMatera can tell me where to go or who to call to find out what we could do, I’d be appreciative. Thanks.
We had the highest utility rates in the nation. When we pointed it out, they added a water connection fee, added a sewer connection fee, got all confused about those fees and started applying them incorrectly all over the place, added a stormwater tax, raised the connection fees, then …. (wait for it) …. raised our fees another 30%!!!
Don’t bother trying to call anyone in that department. No one answers their phone. Call the mayor’s office, ask them to have Michele Virt (heads the stormwater dept) call you back. She’ll be on the phone with you a minute later. When you’re talking to her tell Charlie Field says hi.

Here’s how you get started. Once your paperwork is in, if you feel no one is returning your calls, email me at mariane.jorgenson@richmondgov.com and I will hook you up with someone. I am also a close, personal friend of Utility Buddy.

Oh, my…..WE’RE THE GOVERNMENT. WE’RE HERE TO HELP.
For those that want to go a step further, the James River Association has a River Hero Home program for people taking steps to reduce their home’s stormwater runoff… http://www.jrava.org/what-we-do/river-hero/
I got a credit for my two rain barrels. A good program and an easy application.
So Utiity Buddy, the talking gas meter, really exists? Wow.
Does that mean the Ronald McDOnald, The Easter Bunny, and the Queen of ENgland are all real too?
We also got credit, however, they lost the application the first year, didn’t apply the credit, and I had to re-submit everything. I had to write to the Mayor’s office to get it resolved. They initiate these programs without the internal infrastructure to run them. I was told they have stacks and stacks of applications to process.
Mariane #8 (and everyone else) thank you for your help. I will email you because I still have questions. Again, thanks.
And Chimbo #13, yes I happen to know someone named Ronald McDonald (real human person) and The Queen isn’t someone I’ve met but she was actually here in 2007 for the Jamestown celebration and stopped in at Poe’s Pub (okay maybe that part is a stretch). Not sure about the bunny.
The savings we realize by using rain barrels and not using City water on our plants far outweighs the credits we’d get. The potential credit we’d get isn’t really worth filing the paperwork, IMO.
