Fire on Fairmount Ave (1940)
04/20/2013 8:25 AM by John M
BEAUTY SHOP DAMAGED BY FIRE – Flames can be seen above shooting out of the windows and rear door of a Negro beauty shop, at Twenty-fourth Street and Fairmount Avenue, which was damaged considerably by fire yesterday afternoon. The picture was taken just after firemen arrived and were preparing to play water on the blaze. The origin of the fire is not known. It was brought under control in a short time.

The only building currently standing at that intersection (on the southeast corner) was built in 2007. You can see a small piece of the previous building on that lot in the background of this photo.
The little store on the northwest corner burned in 2007 (also).
A June 2004 satellite image shows the house that used to stand at the northeast corner, and it looks a lot smaller than the building that burned. I think that building in the fire photo must’ve been where that new house stands now, on the southeast corner.
