Fire on Jefferson (1976)
05/01/2013 7:13 AM by John M
Black and white photograph of firemen working to put out fire inside house at 23rd and Jefferson Streets on Church Hill; fire truck parked outside home; hoses cover street; smoke seeps from top of house; top portion of house is black and burned.
The photo is from the Valentine Richmond History Center Collections Database, and is credited to Carl Lynn of Richmond Newspapers, Inc from September 29, 1976.
Can anyone place this? Are any of these houses still standing?
I’m guessing this is where BHC’s Jefferson Mews now stands. The staggering/varying setbacks of the buildings next to one another doesn’t seem to match the pattern of residential buildings on the northern side of Jefferson Ave. near that intersection. Plus, the structure on the right side of the picture looks like part of something that’s non-residential. If I recall correctly, part of the Jefferson Mews block was once a grocery store.
On second thought, maybe they have the intersection mislabeled and it’s actually Jefferson and Leigh. That structure on the far right side of the picture sure looks a lot like part of what is now Church Hill Studios. This would mean the two houses on the left were demolished and that space is now occupied by Jefferson Community Garden.
