These are Virginia Rat Snakes

Don’t panic if you see this guy and gal enjoying their morning stroll. They were climbing down this big tree [in Chimborazo] and into the hole at the base when I walked by, said hi and took their photo.
These are Virginia Rat Snakes – they can grow to 6/8 feet and they do no harm except to rats, mice, voles, small birds and probably baby squirrels. Please do not harm them if you see them, just enjoy their beauty.
Thank you for posting! Love snakes in their natural habitat, and am so glad we have enough such habitat on our hill to host them!
That’s a great picture. It drives me crazy when I see people on Facebook posting pictures of the “cotton mouths” or “copper heads” they killed on their property which are most certainly in reality non-venomous rat or water snakes. This information might help someone from making the same mistake around CH.
There was a large rat snake sunning itself on the steps to the dog park on sunday afternoon. My brother almost and his dogs almost stumbled across it. While I know these snakes are not poisonous, I still think people should watch out for them and give them a wide berth
