That view was even prettier before Johannas jammed those clunky towers in there…
HEY ALEX IS IT EXHAUSTING BEING A DICK ABOUT EVERYTHING?
@2 – do I know you? If not, what’s your fucking problem?
I was only commenting on that because this is basically the view from our house and we have to look at that shitty house everyday. I’d say that gives me reason to be upset about it and I just wanted to point out why I had been so passionate about this building in the past.
Stunning! I posted and one friend suggested it should be a jigsaw puzzle.
@Choady
HAhahahaha! That’s funny. really. (Plus, I don’t see any ‘clunky towers’ or clunky anything.)
@ Alex- move. or quit whining. You pick.
@6 – oh is this your neighborhood? Didn’t realize you controlled who gets to talk here. And if you can’t see the building that sticks out like a sore thumb, you need your vision checked. Try this – imagine you are on the back porch of the yellow house on the bottom left. You had a nice skyline view. You built a nice deck so you could enjoy it. You figured CAR had your back since it requires housing to be of consistent height. Now try to imagine what you can see from that deck.
Seriously, what the fuck’s up with all these burner ids coming out of the woodwork today and what did I do to piss you off? If you’ve got a problem with something I said, I’d be glad to debate the merits of whatever you want to argue about.
Otherwise the ad hominem shit just because I’m outspoken is a little stupid. If you’re so hung up on me, you need to get a life of your own. If you think I’m wrong about something, I’d love to hear what it is.
Now I’m just trying to figure out which of these two losers is Bilder and which is Johannas…
You know, I think Alex sounds like he’s exhausted.
Alex I completely agree with you. It’s an ugly couple of buildings. Totally out of scale.
The photo is great but the big ugly building is out of scale, and you are not the only neighbor to think so. I will probably get jumped on for saying that, but it seems to be my week to have that happen anyway.
Alex, you sure are good at dishing out criticism, but not very good at taking it
Alex, those buildings ARE totally out of scale and unsuited to their location, particularly as they are at the ‘doorway’ to CH coming up Broad (not to mention the mysterious way they sidestepped CAR guidelines.) They’re urban Modern McMansions that don’t relate synergystically to the surrounding architecture…
As far as the haters go, they’re just baiting you. Ignore them. As an outspoken person, you’re bound to attract flac from time to time…
Back to the image. I don’t think it’s a photo. Looks like a composite to me. The low storm clouds over the city look pasted in around the buildings. Not to say it’s not a powerful image. Can anyone confirm or deny my thoughts…Mr. Bopst? And a poster or jigsaw puzzle would probably sell well…
I had no idea so many losers out there had such a personal fascination with me. This is really quite thrilling.
@11 – if I sound annoyed its only because the criticism is so lame. I welcome debate on anything I say but find ad hominem attacks and folks trying to stifle discussion to be a waste of my time.
John,
Is there any way to search past comments by username? I’m trying to recall where I may have had any interactions with any of these clowns in the past or where they’ve had anything to say about anything before. Surely they haven’t all just decided to come out and comment for the first time here have they?
I also wanted to figure out if there’s any evidence that they aren’t just complete trolls.
@12 – I think it’s legit. We get some weird skylines around here. I’ve got one from a little while back that looks like a tsunami about to break over the city. Instagram filters make it look even more dramatic but the skyline/ cloudline looks right.
I’ll be Johannas if you’ll be Bilder. . .
I hate having to explain the obvious, but here goes: You got jumped on b/c a really cool picture was posted and all you could come up with was a complaint. What your detractors are trying to tell you is to enjoy something for once and not be a. . .well, enjoy some stuff, don’t complain all the time.
Have a great day.
While it’s unfortunate the owners of the yellow house lost their view, I think it’s important for folks to realize and take caution when purchasing property so close to a vacant lot. From a Zoning standpoint, the owner of those two infill buildings was completely within his or her right to build at that height and form.
Agree with Alex, spacecat & others. Don’t let the trolls/haters get to you. Those buildings are horrid.
Two things to say:
1.) The photo is obviously photoshopped. I’m not complaining. It’s a beautiful image. Just not an actual photo.
2.) The buildings on Broad Street are a disgrace. I can’t drive in to Church Hill anymore without cringing as I drive past. I feel sorry for anyone that can see it from their residence. Luckily I can’t see if from my house. CAR should be ashamed of themselves for allowing that.
Alex, I think people also push back at you because you feel the need to comment so many times on so many posts. That’s fine that you have an opinion and it would be reasonable to share it from time to time, but do you have to dominate so many discussions? It seems like almost every lenghtly comment stream is about your opinions (which are often negative). You give your opinion, everyone responds to you. It’s gotten to the point where I just might stop reading this blog, which I used to like so much (or at least stop reading the comments).
@18 – I’m not going to rehash this whole debate again but basically what you’re saying is that don’t buy near a vacant lot because you have no idea what will go in there. Seems like that would be pretty hard on real estate prices around here and I thought that was what CAR was supposed to protect against.
Sorry if I hijacked this thread. I saw a picture of the view I see everyday and was annoyed at that ugly piece of shit house. It’s a nice piece of art and I’ll stop with my CAR rant and save that for another forum.
@17 – I enjoy plenty, don’t worry ;-). It’s just that I only feel the need to post about stuff that either annoys me or is really awesome.
Basically, it’s just polite to not dominate every conversation.
Alex – The built-in search here is pretty basic.
Using Google’s Advanced Search for pages on this site with both of the words “Alex” and “Choady” turns up a great number of results (because of the recent comments feature which shows up site-wide). [HERE]
A search for “Alex” and “Choady”, specifying WITHOUT “storm” however, returns no results. [HERE]
@23 – why not just give your opinion too? I’d rather have a dialogue here. Seems odd to get so bent out of shape because some people want to have a discussion.
Amazing picture. The photo, whether filtered or not, works.
Beyond the photo, I like the new buildings. Neigborhood complaints about new construction are inconsistent, so CAR and developers don’t know who to listen to. Most people hate projects with small units. OK, so here’s a bigger building with bigger units! Now the big building is in the way. Some hate “false historicism” and demand reference to contempory design. Other say seamlessness is only achieved with historical architectural references. Further, the economics of building dwelling units are not the same as they were in 1840 or 1890.
From pure design, I think the height gives the buildings a narrowness that nods to the late 19th century buildings of the area, and the plain moldings nod to the greek revival on the immediate blocks. This rear view is reminiscent of the rear views of lots of late 19th century construction in the area. Around here it’s all assymetry in the rear, long/narrow buldings reaching to the alleys, and no rear-facing embellishment for every era house except the Van Lew mansion era.
If you want change, get on CAR and fight against the people who made “false historicism” a bad term. Not trying to pick a fight HERE with that remark – but I’m serious. Perhaps greater attention to details from a specific bygone era would temper some negative comments to this project and others.
