Some love for Poe’s Pub
06/13/2013 6:50 AM by John M
Dana Craig has some love for Poe’s Pub in a review in today’s Times-Dispatch:
If a restaurant can remain popular this long, it’s surely doing something right, and Poe’s has added another “right” to its list by bringing back Steve Jurina, a longtime Richmond chef who has graced the kitchens of LuLu’s and Millie’s Diner.
Jurina is known for his ability to take everyday dishes and give them his special twist while keeping them firmly in the realm of comfort food. Even though Poe’s menu leans toward the bar side of things, Jurina’s presence in the kitchen is noticeable.

Poe’s Pub is doing something right. It is a welcoming meeting place for family, friends and neighbors, and where people of all walks of life and lifestyles feel comfortable coming to.
I can honestly say that I’ve never had a bad meal at Poe’s even when Steve wasn’t there. Glad Dana mentioned Poe’s most delectable meat loaf but you won’t go wrong with anything on the menu.
Poe’s Pub gets well deserved review and pat on the back… it’s about time. We Church Hill residents are very loyal to all of our restaurants, but I feel that sometimes Poe’s has gotten the short end of the stick. I agree with Tim above, and think it is the most welcoming place we have where anyone can feel comfortable. I am regular and have taken all sorts of friends and family there. I’ve also been there for wedding showers, baby showers, graduation celebrations etc. That does tell you something about how folks view it. I also agree with Trish – the food has been yummy, even pre-Steve Jurina. Although he was and is an awesome addition!
It’s a place that I bet even Alex would love!
k- In fact, I think Alex would eat there every night if he had his way! (In his bachelor days, I think he ate there 3-4x/week…)
@6 – Funny you mention that because I actually was a regular there for a few years when I lived at River Lofts and still try to make it out when they have live music. Food’s always been good but it’s even better with Steve cooking.
I guess I’m the new Mikey? Just because I don’t like shitty architecture, our city’s inept government and cesspool culture I suddenly hate everything? 😉
@8 – Alex, ummm, I think Mikey should be really insulted that you would liken yourself to him. Mikey is cute and adorable – as for you, dear neighbor – I don’t know about cute, but “adorable”??! From reading your voluminous postings, “adorable” may be a little bit of a stretch, even for own your mother, to ascribe to your being.
That aside, Steve rocks the meatloaf! (But I’m sure you already know that.)
Alex, trust me, i’m right there with you when it comes to critiquing that mess of a building on broad street! (but lets refrain from going there right now! we’ll save that for another day)
