Group wants to establish boys-only charter school for grades 6-12

A group called the Richmond Urban Collective is proposing a boys-only charter school for the city of Richmond. Church Hill Preparatory Academy is designed to serve about 100 students each in grades six through 12. It would begin with a sixth-grade class as early as the fall of 2014 and add one grade each year for seven years, if it gains approval from the city’s School Board.

I just read the application. As a public school teacher, I am not one to typically support charters, but on paper this sounds like a sound plan to address a debilitating problem on our community.
I’ll 2nd that, super especially for the East End. I hope that they can find a spot in the area.
Where they planned to set up was my next question. 700 students is no small undertaking. Is there even an existing building sizable enough and in good enough condition to not be a complete renovation in the area?
I love the idea though. In theory…I hope it pans out and would love to hear more about the hiring process and involvement if this comes to fruition.

It looks like they’re still active (on Facebook anyway https://www.facebook.com/RichmondUrbanCollective/timeline), but it doesn’t look like the project is moving forward very quickly if at all
Franklin Military School/Academy (9-12) might be roomy enough to accommodate a charter school, it’s a handsome building.
Franklin has been grades 6-12 for the past few years, fyi

“On a 6-2 vote Monday night, with one member abstaining, the board agreed to allow the Richmond Urban Collective to open Metropolitan Preparatory Academy for the 2016-17 school year — if it meets four conditions.
Bedden’s staff had recommended against the school because it lacked a facility in which to hold classes. Finding one was the biggest condition. The charter school supporters have until Aug. 3 to find a building and until Oct. 1 to produce a lease or purchase agreement.”
