From a press release from Richmond Public Schools:

Dr. Jonathan Lewis Appointed Interim Superintendent of Richmond City Schools

The Richmond City School Board, during a special June 26 meeting, appointed Dr. Jonathan Lewis to serve as Richmond Public Schools’ interim superintendent, beginning July 1. He will replace Dr. Yvonne Brandon, who previously announced her resignation as superintendent, effective June 30.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Lewis to Richmond Public Schools as interim superintendent. We believe his past experience as a superintendent, his reputation for solid leadership in public education, as well as his familiarity with Richmond, will greatly serve our 24,000 students, staff and community partners as we continue to move this district forward while looking for a permanent superintendent,” said Jeffrey Bourne, Chairman, Richmond City School Board.

A 33-year veteran educator and administrator, Dr. Lewis’ experience in public education spans both urban and suburban settings throughout the Commonwealth. He recently retired as superintendent from Fauquier County Public Schools, where he served from January 2008 to January 2013. Before that, Lewis served as superintendent of Poquoson’s public school system for nine years and as assistant superintendent for Hanover County Public Schools from 1996 to 1999.

No stranger to Richmond Public Schools, Dr. Lewis began his career in public education as an English teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School from 1979 to 1983. From there, he worked as both an assistant principal and principal at Armstrong High School from 1983 to 1989.

A graduate of the University of Richmond, Dr. Lewis earned his master’s degree in English from Virginia Commonwealth University and his doctorate from the College of William and Mary. He was named the Region II Superintendent of the Year in 2006, and was awarded a lifetime membership to the Virginia Council of PTAs.
