Want a cat or some furniture?

You’re in luck! Check out the Elves Cat Adoption Drive & Moving Sale.
So, let me get this straight…
You’ve had four of these cats for a year and didn’t manage to get them adopted, then picked up three new kittens, presumably with the knowledge that you’d be moving shortly and now you need to re-home SEVEN cats in a month.
Good luck.
If you are still interested in adopting a cat we have four 1-year-old male cats that need to find homes ASAP! We fly out July 30th, please help spread the word. Link to craigslist with pics and personality profiles:

@All Bark – these cats ended up needing minor eye surgery, so that I could adopt them out without people needing to give them special care. Combine that with my own health problems and school problems I’ve had this past year, and you would understand why I’m in this predicament.
People keep dropping off sick/dying cats on my doorstep, since they don’t know how to care for them and the SPCA and the pound won’t accept them. It’s either take them in, or let them die. I’m sure you would have made the same choice.
I’d have taken them to the shelter and if they kill them it’s not my worry. You’ve got a good heart but you can’t save the whole world. Dumping money on fixing up unneeded strays could have been better spent on other problems IMO. Here’s hoping I’m wrong and someone else takes these in though…
Dont’ let negative people on here get you down. They like to flex their internet sarcasm and put people down. You do good things.
This is why people think you are a dick, Alex. IMO.
Amen, Xela.
Hey Rachel, Im actually moving into your awesome home Aug. 1st! I wish I could take a cat from you but I already have 3 rescues! However if you are interested in leaving some furniture that does not sell, I may want it.
I am kinda shocked that we have people who would actually go to the trouble to make a rude and/or insensitive comment about a person trying to help animals in need on here. Are you serious?! Why would you want to make yourselves look bad. Re-evaluate your lives!
Rachel,
You do wonderful things and I wish you all the luck adopting the kittens out. I would take one myself but already have 3 dogs and a cat.
I hope you found homes for all the cats, I really do. Which is why I wish you luck-it’s kitten season and there’s a lot of competition out there.
What you do is admirable and a help for the community, but I still have to ask, what do people have against animal care and control here?
They do excellent work and as far as I know, have never turned away a surrender. More importantly, they have excellent adoption numbers, over 90%.
Yes, they do euthanize dogs and cats.
But someone has to.
Who else will put down the aggressive dog that mauls a child, or the cat hit by a car with its guts trailing from its body or the elderly dog whose owner can’t afford a private practice vet to euthanize it?
So, if anyone finds any strays or pets, and they can’t foster them indefinitely or for a year or pay for surgery etc, animal control exists solely to help you with that. So I don’t see why Alex is a dick for pointing that out.
Thanks for everyone’s support. You can meet these wonderful cats Saturday and Sunday, 10am-4pm during our gigantic yard sale at 871 N 22ND ST. They have really great personalities and get along well with other cats if you have one already.
If you read my earlier posts, you would know that the pound and the SPCA would not take these animals. You might wonder how I wind up with these animals…two fun stories:
-A group of neighborhood kids showed up at 12:30am one night a few weeks ago with a 3 month old kitten that was malnourished, and had numerous treatable health problems. She is now happy and healthy and looking for a home.
-An old friend of mine showed up one Saturday afternoon with three 2-week old kittens, after the SPCA and the pound refused to accept them. They were extremely dehydrated and had not eaten in 1 week, their mother had run off. Despite my immediate attention and round-the-clock care one of the kittens died. The other two recovered, and now both of them have good homes.
To the trolls out there: don’t presume to tell me how to spend my money or time, and I will refrain from doing the same with you. There are many ways to “waste” money that are worse than this…But I choose to spend some of my money on saving lives of animals. So sue me. I have spayed/neutered around 30 cats in this community, about 20 of which now have good homes or soon will. The other 10 are living out their days happily outside – without producing more kittens.
@17 – nobody’s questioning your sainthood here. Sorry if I sounded otherwise. You’re obviously welcome to do as you see fit with your time and money.
I was just attempting to inject some truth into the discussion and point out that it may be hard to find a taker for these cats as there’s lots of them available. It seems folks don’t want to hear harsh realities though so I’ll step back and let folks return to fairy tales.
Again, I’m not rooting against you here and genuinely hope all your cats find a home.
Perhaps posters #11, 12 and 13 would be interested in cats to prove that I’m wrong? Otherwise I’m going to use the truth defense to charges of dickiness…
Rachel–as always, well said! I think I can speak for many of my neighbors when I say how fortunate we are to have had you live in our little slice of Richmond for the past few years.
Your personal energy, environmental stewardship and community leadership inspires us. You’ve improved the quality of life for many, many people (and animals) . You will be missed when you leave Union Hill, but please know that you have “made your mark” in more ways than you can possibly imagine. Peace be with you–and thank you.
Rachel, union hills loss is vancouvers gain. Thank you for your years of volunteer work with the gardens ,the animals, and the children. To you gutless mouthy twerps who delight in raining on any good parade……whats it like to be such losers? Hiding your identity while spewing bile is the kind of tactic that reeks of insecurity . Its creepy to think that this kind of criticism vomited up by the secret santas of snideness comes from neighbors too sad to own up to their smallness of soul. Count on an anonymous forum to bring out the asshats…….
Lordy! Buddy started out nice (OMG) but then reverted back to his old self.
Although I have to love Secret Santas of Snideness!
Cracked me up!
Alex,
“gutless mouthy twerp” – Hey, if the sandal fits, wear it.
For folks like YOU, truth = “dickiness”. Aren’t you mature enough to realize that some “truths” are so evident that pointing them out would only be productive if you were actually trying to be a “dick”?
So let’s rephrase: (#18) “I was just attempting to inject some (strike: truth) dickiness into the discussion and point out…”
At the end of the day, Rachel Elves is trying to better our community with her time, energy and resources. You, dear neighbor, are just trying to be a “dick”. #must suck to be YOU
Haha…thanks for the support and laughs neighbors 🙂 Gonna miss you guys…
Few comments:
1) I am not applying for saint of the year. Everyone should realize that you can make a difference in your own small corner of the world. You don’t have to save the entire world and you shouldn’t try. Pick a cause you can get behind and volunteer your time 2 hours a month. I double dare you. Then sit back and bask in the good feelings you get from making a real difference. Hint: making random negative comments on blogs doesn’t count.
2) The world sucks. I realize that. Not every cat/human/tree can be saved. I just chip in where I can. The government and/or non-profits can’t do everything themselves to fix society’s problems. Get off the couch and do something about it yourself. If you have time to complain, you have time to get involved.
3) Euthanasia has its place. Rather than put my cat Socks through expensive chemo and prolong his suffering with cancer, I had him put down last year the very same day I learned of his diagnosis. Hard choices have to be made sometimes.
4) Doesn’t it make you just a little sad when perfectly good, lovable animals are put down for no reason other than they don’t have a home? All as a result of people not getting their pets fixed and/or abandoning their pets?
5) There is a homeless pet epidemic in Richmond, as we’re all aware. I will personally show you how to use a humane cat trap and refer you to organizations that will help you get feral/stray cats fixed for free. Stop by my yard sale this weekend. It isn’t hard & doesn’t take up much time, you can sometimes catch 4 cats in one night, get them fixed, and release them back where you found them the very next day. If everyone commenting here got 1-4 cats fixed there would a large drop in stray kittens born overnight. I guarantee it.

To Rachel, I don’t know you but you ROCK. I’m sorry to hear that you are leaving our dear community.
@24 – I agree with everything you said.
You’ve done a lot of good for the community, no denying that. Here’s hoping you find takers on the cats and the rest of your stuff.
@23 – are you suggesting we just put our head in the sand when the truth doesn’t fit with what we hear? It sure sounds like it…
@26 – I am suggesting that we keep “dickiness” buried in the sand, regardless…
Capiche?
Alex, though its hard to agree with you after your snarky comments, I find it ironic that the people who have accused you of hate mongering are doing so so vehemently, and well, dickishly. I, too, would like to see all the people who disagreed with your initial comment to put their “money where their mouth is” and prove you wrong by adopting those cats.
Rachel, it sounds like you have done an admirable job of caring for those lost souls when they needed it. Good work. It will be hard, though, to find people who are willing to continue your selfless work.
Wonkyeye
As usual, well said!!!
