Summer at the Fairy Garden

And That’s How I Choose To Remember It has a neat little set of photos from the ever-changing Fairy Garden on Grace Street.
In the Church Hill Newsletter the Fairy Garden had a reference of Gnomes living there. Apparently this reference generated a heated discussion at a social gathering about gnomes vs. fairies. The man relating this to me said it was hilarious watching this debate between grown men, none of whom were under 6 ft. tall.!!
The final consensus was——“everybody knows it’s faires”!!
Suzanne, It is on the corner of 28th and East Grace St.
This is one of my favorite things about Church Hill.
On every walk I take through the neighborhood I make sure to visit the faerie garden. It always makes me smile.
Many people have asked why the Fairy Garden was created.
When Mary Ann Buffington was dying, she was consumed with fear, apprehension, and in severe pain. Going to the hospital to be with her was an intrusion to those who were already there by her side. In my need to comfort this remarkable woman, I created the fairy garden.
The fairy garden was to be a place to think positive thoughts, leave hopeful messages, make people smile, contemplate and forward good vibes for Mary Ann. It was to let her know that she was loved and would be missed . It was supposed to be temporary.
But something happened. It took on a life of it’s own. People started leaving little additions. Some of them were hand made, some were store bought. All of them were funny, thought provoking, clever, and endearing. I found myself checking the fairy garden with daily anticipation for what I might find.
Now, the fairy garden is there for no other reason than to make us smile, feel better about life and hopefully pass on the compassion that all our fellow beings need. Children like to add stuff and rearrange things. Adults do the same! I have found notes stuck to the tree that have made me roll with laughter and weep.
The fairy garden is here to stay because it serves it’s sole purpose. It makes us smile!!!
I saw this first the first time this last weekend on a walk with a friend who just moved to church hill. It’s very cute and we both stopped to check it out. Came home to my Northside bungalow thinking I need to find a good place to create something just as charming!
Thanks again, Jean! Fairies, gnomes, elves, sprites and brownies are welcome on the Hill.
