Bellevue School under construction (circa 1912)
07/22/2013 8:57 AM by John M
From the Carneal & Johnston Negative Collection at the Library of Virginia.
I have always heard different rumors as to why the Van Lew mansion was demolished and the Bellevue school built in its place. Some say it was in a state of disrepair. Virginius Dabney wrote that it was a stupid decision of the city school board (or city council?) to knock it down and build the school in its place.
Thinking that Dabney was implying that there was still anger and hostility toward Elizabeth Van Lew and her efforts long after the civil war.
Does anyone have any information about this?
