New York loves Church Hill
New York Magazine’s Tap Into the New South in Richmond has some love for Church Hill, giving The Roosevelt, WPA Bakery, and St.John’s a good mention:
“Revitalized neighborhoods, new cultural attractions, and a rising culinary scene are rejuvenating Virginia’s capital. […] Reserve a table well in advance for The Roosevelt, the perennially packed, modern Southern gastropub that opened two years ago in the emerging Church Hill neighborhood. […] Grab a coffee and a delicious GF canele at WPA Bakery (pastries from $1), a new confectionary in a turn-of-the-century inn. […] Pause at St. John’s Church, where Patrick Henry gave his famous “Give me liberty or give me death” speech in 1775. Peak inside the moonlit cemetery, final resting place of patriot George Wythe, and let freedom ring all the way back to your hotel.”
Oh great… now New Yorkers will be crawling all over the Hill. The mosquitos have already been bad this year and now a much worse pest is on the way. Even more frightening, some of them may realize how cheap and pleasant it is here and try to move.
If anyone from New York is reading, stay home, Church Hill sucks and there’s nothing to see here. Check out the Short Pump area for the best of Richmond.
How rude Alex, yet many people call new yorkers rude? I am guessing u r not from the south as the south prides themselves on their hospitality and manners.
@Alex–too late, we’re already here.
@2 – get a sense of humor. I’m 90% kidding.
(I get a little annoyed by the small minority of New Yorkers who think the universe revolves around that cesspool of a city but most are no different than anyone else. )
Though to my knowledge, you’re wrong about the South priding itself on being hospitable to New Yorkers. That’s might be what folks tell the tourists 😉
didn’t say they pride themselves on being hospitable to New Yorkers. The South prides itself on being generally kind, mannered people to everyone. I get they don’t “love” New Yorkers, but they are Not rude.
@5 – are you usually this blanketing with stereotypes? I wasn’t aware that being born South of the Mason-Dixon Line meant someone was obligated to behave a certain way. Unlike my joking about the bad reputation that New Yorkers have in some places, it appears that you actually believe that the stereotype applies to everyone.
Are you personally from the South or did you move here thinking it was going to be like an episode of the Beverly Hillbillies?
I’m with Alex! The movie “Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil” — along with the asset of the renowned Savannah College of Art and Design — and New Yorkers have descended on Savannah like locusts. With a few reviews of this sort about Church Hill, plus the rising reputation of the VCU Brand Center, and Madison Avenue types could be taking over here, as well. It’s already difficult to find sweet tea and corn bread on the Hill. Will I have to trash all my seersucker and start wearing all black all the time?
