Zagat picks Alamo BBQ for Virginia’s state sandwich
08/28/2013 2:26 PM by John M
From Karri Peifer at richmond.com:
August is apparently National Sandwich Month and Zagat.com picked a sandwich from each state “that best embody the spirit of each community and its local cuisine.”
And for Virginia it’s Richmond’s own Alamo BBQ. Its Cuban sandwich, to be exact.
Not at all surprised. I’m VERY proud to have them in the neighborhood. It’s “joints” like Alamo that give a neighborhood a pulse. Chris and his hard working Crew are V.I.P.’s (Very Into Pork,), and their food is now rightfully lauded far & wide. It’s great to smell the smoke as it drifts deliciously out from the grills…
I’m glad Alamo is getting a lot of recognition. Along with the other awsome restaurants in the neighborhood, it brings increasing and deserved recognition of what a great neighborhood the greater Churchill area is.
I hope the Alamo get lots more business from far and wide for the recent positive media and I also hope they put some of those profits back into the business, namely a better air conditioning system for the crew that sweats in there all day long with just a tube fan to create a breeze. A basic minisplit can cost around $3000 installed and could easily and quietly cool (and heat) that little room.
I ate there last Thursday, and the soft siren song of that pulled pork sandwich is already calling me back for lunch tomorrow.
Not their best sandwich, but highly deserved!
Haha. My friend just texted me after reading my post and tells me you can’t make good pork if you’re comfortable.
Maybe he’s right? If it’s gonna make the food any less delicious, nix the minisplit idea. Sorry Alamo crew. Your suffering benefits the entire community and we love you for it.
I’ll second Luke that this isn’t even their best sandwich. Pretty amazing for that to happen. Philly brisket, regular brisket or even plain chicken and slaw are even better IMO but they’re all awesome.
Every time I drive past Alamo and smell that smell, it makes me so sad to be a vegetarian.
Anne – they’ve got veggie options… 🙂
Anne – the portobello sandwich is my favorite! Totally veg friendly. Or maybe the pb taco… Or fish taco… Or all of it
