Union Market seeking ABC
09/28/2013 12:29 PM by John M
Union Market, the coming retail/commercial tenant at the former Johnson’s spot on Jefferson Avenue, is seeking a Wine and Beer On and Off Premises/Keg Permit/Delivery ABC Permit.
Where does the CHA chime in on this. Are they opposed to this as well? How about the neighbors?
So pumped about this. Embrace this place Church Hill!
This new place is in Union Hill, not Church Hill.
As a neighborhood we need to move into a post-CHA dominate era. I get it, there were a lot of pioneers that remember the bad old days, but those tired souls cannot be allowed to define the future of the East End. There are many of us that are pro-business, pro-development, pro-responsible-sale-of-alcohol and–dare I say–pro-condo. I, for one, do not think a group of blue blood, blue hairs should hold so much clout over reasonable people trying to grow or start their reasonable businesses.
I hear the Union Hill Civic Association supports this, as do the immediate neighbors. The request is reasonable. So are the neighbors.
The CHA won’t chime in on this at all. Generally speaking, they could care less what happens north of Broad. And that is the truth. I am very excited about this shop opening. Have been wanting a convenient place for good quick food/deli/six pack o’beer type of biz in this neighborhood for some time.
I think it’s important to remember that The future Union Market will be located on Jefferson Avenue, in the middle of the Greater Church Hill East End community. Jefferson Avenue literally used to be a ravine, diagonally separating the hill. Now, Jefferson is a main thoroughfare that hosts community gardens, bicycle and bus routes, restaurants, and bakeries. This market could unite the entire hill on a daily basis with sandwiches, salads, fresh vegetables, and staple groceries that anyone might need in a pinch. Yes, there will be beer and wine. But it will be stocked and delivered tastefully with an upscale, but affordable market in mind. I know these owners very closely. They know what reputation our community is trying to build and what kind of small business we need.
Almost exactly one year ago, Ed Trask painted a beautiful art piece just one block away on an abandoned store front on Jefferson with a simple message: “TRUST”. I encourage everyone to trust in what I hope will become an incredible (and delicious) asset to our rising neighborhood.
This North of Broad, 32-year resident, tired soul, gray hair, and no blue blood , is excited and eager for this shop to open. I also live two blocks away so I guess I’m considered “neighbor” and will be there regularly.
“Yes, there will be beer and wine.” That should read: YES, there will be beer AND wine!!!!!!

The FDA will typically defer to other civic associations such as West Ave, West Grace and Your Neighbors Uptown that are closer to and/or more affected by a potential zoning change. There is no reason to think that the CHA would be any different as this is Union Hill. Remembering that the CHA initially supported the ‘for public consumption’ version of Buffington’s SUP, is it not amazing how easily a BZA or SUP change will fly through the system unnoticed (local case in point is the Roosevelt) when good will is shown by the owner?
Wonderfully put, Curt. Can’t wait for this place to open. I look forward to becoming quite the regular at this place!
This is very good news, assuming that the efforts of these good entrepreneurs are not going to be thwarted by the City or the nearby neighborhoods. This south-of-Broad resident will frequent it often.
So excited for this to open!!!
This S.N.O.B. (Slightly North of Broad) resident is psyched! We’re lucky that these local entrepreneurs have chosen to re-invest back into their own community. My husband and I look forward to reaping the rewards (and craft beer)!
When is this place supposed to open?
Great!
Hopefully, a new era has arrived and the mindset that the CHA will determine what is good and bad for this neighborhood is behind us. I was elected to the new Board and am looking forward to being a part of the change that I am sensing. As a resident of the Chimborazo/Oakland neighborhoods, I will be sourcing for idea, comments I can take back to the Board to help it accomplish its new vision.
