Agenda for the 10/22 CAR meeting
10/15/2013 8:00 AM by John M
The agenda for the Tuesday, October 22, 2013 meeting of the Commission of Architectural Review includes 2 local projects: 2314 VENABLE ST Replace windows and siding, repair porch; 2118 M ST Construct new residence
The meeting will be held at 3:30 PM in the 5th Floor Conference Room of City Hall.
Historic preservation isn’t just about grand structures and heroes; it’s about telling the story of a place and time inclusive of all its residents.
2314 Venable is a Late Victorian, 1890 ca., Single Dwelling. This I-story, 2-bay frame dwelling has a hip-roofed porch with square posts and sawn balusters. The building has a bracketed cornice with dentils and ventilator panels in frieze and is a contributing structure to the Union Hill Old and Historic District. Historic preservation isn’t just about grand structures and heroes; it’s about telling the story of a place and time inclusive of all its residents.
Good to see that someone is taking interest in this little shotgun house; it can be a jewel if properly restored.
This Venable house is a charmer. It’s a testament to the fine craftsmanship and detail of tradesmen’s houses in the 19th century in the area, not unlike similar areas in New Orleans. Glad there is interest in it and I hope the changes are sensitive.
That picture is the perfect illustration of why CAR is a joke. The house to the left is clearly losing its siding but we’re going to discuss paint colors and make the guy who wants to fix his house jump through hoops?
I agree it’s worth saving this one but think we’re missing the forest for the trees. If it weren’t a pain in the ass to make repairs we wouldn’t have so many crumbling houses.
Am sometime surprised by how little seems to be known about CAR’s duties/responsibilities. Granted, I’ve learned a lot since I’ve begun to go to the meetings, but to carp without doing the same or even reading the applications attached to the CAR agendas……wtf?
Amen Houdon!

There’s more to the problem of vacancy and blighted/derelict properties than CAR. To think that is a major contributor is sophomoric.
We have here an opportunity for something beautiful to have happen to this house. Let’s not focus on the negatives. Even if that is your specialty.
@7 – So would you have us believe that it doesn’t cost anymore to renovate a home under CAR standards?
We can disagree about whether CAR is a net positive but to say that it doesn’t create a burden for some homeowners seems to be taking it a bit far.
