Heads up! Rock-throwing kids at Jefferson Park
Ben sends in a tale of tomfoolery from Jefferson Park:
I’d let you know that people might want to be careful walking on Marshall Street below Jefferson Park.
While walking there around sunset with my wife Sunday evening 3-4 teenagers threw some very sizable rocks at us from one of the benches at the top of the hill, big enough to do some serious damage had they hit us (they didn’t miss by much). Unfortunately my wife was hit by a smaller rock, but luckily I was not.
I went up the stairs to go after them and made if to the turnaround circle but they had started running up 21st street. I think they were a little surprised we came after them and turned into some big cowards when we did.
It was a great night before that…..there were tons of people enjoying the park and were surprised when I told them what had happened.
I’d hate to see a child at the school down there get hit by this same group…
TAGGED: Jefferson Park
Had similar experience last year while driving and kids were throwing at cars. I’d hate to be parked at the base of the hill because of the damage that can be caused by their reckless behavior, let alone potential injuries.
Folks:
Please CALL RPD ASAP when things like this occur. “Ben”, you may have done so, but it wasn’t mentioned above. I witnessed Lt. Daniel Minton from our 1st Precinct (Daniel.Minton@richmondgov.com) respond in person along w/other Officers to this same situation last year in the Park.
Clearly, not much has changed in the last 150 years: http://www.mdgorman.com/Events/rock_battles.htm
@RCA1861:
Even after 152 years, kids with too much time on their hands haven’t changed a bit.
More interesting info from that time in history (previously posted here by John M.):
“In 1882, the great divide at the southern edge of Union Hill was filled and graded to create Church Hill Avenue (renamed Jefferson Avenue in 1905). In 1887, the City purchased Doing’s Hill for a park. Marshall Park was enlarged at the turn of the century and renamed Jefferson Park. In 1888, the Sprague Electric Railway Motor Company designated Jefferson Avenue as a trolley route. This decision made commuting more feasible for existing residents and made the neighborhood more attractive to potential inhabitants.”
Great info @Thornley – Let’s rename Jefferson Avenue “Church Hill Avenue”
