wtvr profiles Anna Julia Cooper School:

The school’s founder, Mike Maruca, is known to go door-to-door in Richmond’s public housing courts to recruit students. Maruca developed AJC to cater to students in high crime, high poverty areas.

“The need here is so overwhelming and this is very important to me. I do not view what we do as an alternative. I do not feel like we’re competitors [with public schools],” Maruca said.

AJC offers students smaller classes, prayer in school, a longer learning day, and mandatory summer school.
