Council to consider ABC off for Union Market
Union Market is on the agenda for the Monday night’s City Council meeting (PDF):
Ord. No. 2013-233 (Patron: Mayor Jones, By Request) – To amend Ord. No. 2006-256-268, adopted Oct. 23, 2006, which authorized the special use of the properties known as 2300 and 2306 Jefferson Avenue for restaurant uses and the construction of an addition to the building, for the purpose of authorizing the sale of beer and wine for off-premises consumption, upon certain terms and conditions.
This would amend the ordinance which originally allowed Jumpin’ J’s to open as a restaurant in the spot and the use of the outside space for dining. The main change is the allowance to sell ABC off-premises, per approval of the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
The Devil’s fire water is once again a threat to our homes and our children. I call on the Church Hill and Union Hill chapters of the Anti-Saloon League to stand up for temperance, prohibition and the American Way as they did with Captain Buzzy. Only by standing with our craziest neighbors can we turn back the clock to 1920 for the families of Church Hill and Union Hill.
@BAF-
In the interest of the Holiday spirit of Peace and Love,
*PLEASE* don’t equate Union Hill with those Capt. Buzz-killers. We North Of Broad folk embrace progress, and have been known to “knock back a few” from time to time.
The Devil makes work for idle hands…without a beverage.
This made me laugh. Thanks.
I don’t think this one will meet the same level of opposition (let’s hope).
It’s 2013 not 1920. How unfortunate that Buzzys request was met with such closed minded resentment. As a new resident of the area I’m hopeful that the terms “growth” and “opportunity” are actual values of the neighborhood and not just terms that the residents like to throw around. Give Union Market the necessary permits to have a chance at competing for business with all of the other Church Hill restuarants or don’t have any restuarants at all. Don’t punish the majority for the fears of a few extremists. My vote it’s to let them try.
The temperance league doesn’t feel safe walking that far North.
I hope they plan to open early. This would be a very convenient location for any MCV doctors or nurses who want to get drunk on their way home from work at 6 AM. It’s even closer to MCV than Buzzy’s is! They could just toss their empty beer cans along Marshall Street when they are done.
@MrsAlex Union Market will be selling a few delicious coffees to choose from!
As Union Hill homeowners Becky and I enthusiastically embrace the Union Market and it’s plans. I encourage all our neighbors to support this amendment. Let our actions speak for us and the community we choose to live in and enjoy
I’ll be at City Council tonight to show my support for Union Market. I can’t wait for them to open, and only a block and a half from our house. Woo-hoo!
***Congratulations Union Market***
Your neighbors support you, and look forward to making the Market not only a local favorite, but a success story for us *all* to be proud of.
Yea! We are going to have 2 new markets (I feel confident that Urban Farmhouse will also get ABC on/off)!!! This is so amazing! I cannot believe how much the Church Hill area has grown in the 8+ years that I’ve lived here.
Congratulations Union Market! Can’t wait to walk over and get a sandwich and a pint of craft beer!
Great news! Was there any opposition?
Union Market in Union Hill! Way to go.
Hunter, Brooke, et al….. CONGRATS AND WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD! 🙂 🙂 🙂
So much hard work has gone into this from all three partners (and their loved ones). I’m so proud of Gillian, Hunter, and Shaun. They have been busting their butt, marketing and communicating to our community the right way, and will see the tremendous rewards in turn. Congratulations.
@13, the ordinance was on the consent agenda, and the vote was unanimously in favor of all items.
