Fly Richmond’s official city flag no matter the season. A large navy blue color field covers the top two-thirds of the design, with two red and two white stripes alternating below. The flag features a silhouette of a bateau boatman on the James River, surrounded by an arch of nine stars, representing the nine states that were once a part of the State of Virginia’s original territory: Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan.
– Handcrafted from soft, high-quality special treated nylon
– Water repellent and UV resistant to extend the life and vibrancy of the flag
– 29″ x 43″
Anybody know when we switched away from the old Richmond city flag?
This flag came out back in the late 80’s when Brown’s Island was developed, the bateau boatman statue was erected and they excavated the land where the James Center is now. During that dig, to provide underground parking, they discovered the remains of several old bateau boats in remarkably good preservation. It’s a shame that Richmond doesn’t have an official flag that represents our history or culture better than this one. This does not say “Richmond”.
The new flag was adopted in 1993.

I like the Old flag better!
The old flag was generic. A seal and latin writing? Boooring. Recently I went in the gift shop and asked if they had the Richmond flag- now that they do I’ll be going in on Monday to buy one for Christmas!
