Excellent to be able to zoom into this photo. I’ve seen it many times before & have always been intrigued by the row houses on the right side of Broad. Going by the awnings those were probably shops? Anybody know anything more about them?
Again, I need help from the “experts” here! I guess this is taken from the overlook by the current ChildSavers/old WRVA?
Easy to see Monumental Church, the Egypt Bldg, and Broad just slightly West. All I can pick out beyond that is the Capitol a few blocks further west. I wish I knew what I was looking at!! Lumpkins Jail and all the graveyard must be right there too? Where’s the train?
This is the closest modern-day snapshot I could find taken from approximately the same location, taken from the East Grace Street near the WRVA tower. You can easily spot a number of buildings that are still standing from the old photograph.
