How is it out there tonight?

The East End has the reputation for getting kind of shooty on New Years Eve. Not the intentionally violent kind, but the “going out and shooting what you’ve got” kind.
It’s all for fun, maybe to scare away the bad spirits, but it can still be awful, though. Y’all be careful out there. Every year people say that it sounds a little more quiet than the year before…
Annectdotally: I had a student come in last year after break all excited “my dad let me shoot off so many guns on New Years!”
New to the area? Check out the sounds of New Years on Fairmount Avenue from a few years back…
I’m just off of Clay and hearing tons of gunshots every couple of minutes, coming from the north. Womp. :\
Already pretty shooty over here in South Side.
Possible gun shots in the vicinity of 25th and East Grace (or possibly East Franklin – I think Main St. is too far away for that sound to travel) right at midnight. Fireworks at 26th and East Marshall at 11:30 p.m. Now low boom boom fireworks from somewhere south of me, possibly across the river. Not as bad as some years so far!
And yes, I called the cops on the possible gun shots, they sounded too much like gun rather than fireworks.
JUST moved to north side and expected a quieter New Years than last year in Church Hill. WRONG. This is way worse!!!
sappy new year. instead of celebratory bangs it has been steady gunfire challenges
A war has started north of my house, and it is quite scary. It seems worse this year, but there are some questionable apartments being rented about three blocks north of me. It sounds like a lot of the gunfire is coming from those apartments. Getting the slumlords out of church hill cannot come soon enough for me.
Quiet as a church mouse in Fulton! :^)
Not shooty on Venable…good sleeping “weather” up here
Sure sounds exceptionally shooty. From where we are in Chimbo, hard to tell where all the gunfire is coming from. Was ammo cheap this year? Because, I mean, I’d kind of like to shoot 2013 in the ass too, but wow…
Wow.. wasn’t so bad here… they didn’t start really until 3 minutes until midnight, then it was quiet by 12:30…
Spotty gunfire starting at 8:30 or so, but then solid non-stop exchanges of clip-emptying gunfire started a little before midnight, peaking as expected at midnight, and lasting a good 25 minutes or so (at least, that’s when I could get back to sleep). all kinds of guns. Seemed a lot heavier this year than in years past.
Barton heights was way worse this year. Usually can only hear shots coming from gilpin and east of north ave, this year the shots seemed to be coming from everywhere. Also they went on for a long long time.
It’s difficult to distinguish between gun fire and fireworks. I only heard fireworks which were rapid in succession as opposed to hand guns that fire off with each pull of the trigger. As in semi automatics.
Wayyyyyy worse than last year. From the M/25th area vantage point it sounded like a shooting range over to the Northeast of us past Mason ES.
I’d be shocked if no one (or their car, roof, etc) got hit by a falling bullet!
Heard more gunshots last night than in previous years.
I’m on Chimbo btwn Broad and Marshall. Starting at about 11:45 and ending about 12:15 it was non-stop and all around me. I know they’re not aiming at anyone but that was ridiculous.
Agreed, this year was one of the worst if not the worst in 12 years. Started a few minutes before midnight, slowed after about 20 minutes, last pop hear around 12:37. We heard “something” hit either our house or one of our neighbors houses. Going around the house to inspect for bullet holes. Worried about our new roof….and our cars.
At vicinity of clay and Chimborazo it was impressive. Really gave me that authentic Mexian cartel gun battle effect. Hope no one was hurt.
Looking forward to comments from our Lt Dan. R.P.D Epic fail.
300 block of N 32nd – really bad from 11:45 pm until about 12:20 am. Worse I’ve heard in the 8 years we’ve been here. Nothing too close to our house, not that it really matters.
Just as live as previous years in Brauers. A lot of shots before midnight. Every year I get nervous watching tv on my floor spot. By midnight I always find a little humor in the ridiculously heavy gunfire.
28th & Broad area was relatively quiet. Nothing like 25 years ago when shooting guns in the air was a way of celebrating anything……………
@31 – going back 25 years, was the Hill Cafe there in 1988? I’m just curious. I know it was not in 1978, it was still the Rendez Vous East back then, but I can’t remember when it became the Hill. It was Bruce Tyler (former City Council member for the First District), his wife Pat, (they lived on the 2800 block of East Grace then) and Stan Barnett, who made it the Hill, but I can’t remember when they did that. Would be curious to see if anyone remembers.
Back when it was the Rendez Vous, they didn’t have guns then, they just had knife fights. IMHO crack brought guns into the city, but again that’s just my personal opinion….
I sent Lt. Dan a link to this and asked him if he’d like to comment, will wait and see what, if anything, he has to say about last night.
In 1988, it was still the Rendezvous & the house behind it was where most of the shooting-in-the-air went on. I don’t recall police being at the Rendezvous much in those days although the windows were blacked out so we never knew what went on inside. I just checked the City’s property records & Bruce Tyler bought it in Oct 1989 so I imagine the Hill opened in 1990.
@33 thanks!
