Sub Rosa Bakery set to reopen Saturday, January 18th in same Church Hill location

Bakery reopens after 9 month reconstruction following devastating fire

Richmond, Virginia—January 6th, 2014—Sub Rosa Bakery plans to open its doors once again at 9 a.m. on Saturday, January 18th, 2014*. This follows a nine month renovation period after an accidental fire left portions of the bakery and its adjoining three apartments scorched and in need of repair. Sub Rosa first opened in December 2012 to critical acclaim and quickly became a neighborhood institution. The first wood­fired bakery of its kind in Virginia, Sub Rosa will continue to offer hand crafted breads and pastries made from local, organic ingredients including their own stone­milled flours. Though open for less than four months in 2013, Sub Rosa appeared in both Martha Stewart Living and Saveur magazines.

Upon reopening, Sub Rosa also plans to expand its lunch menu with the addition of pressed sandwiches, soups, and, in the future, a select choice of wine and ales. They will continue serving the unique Sub Rosa coffee blend, sourced and roasted by Lamplighter Roasting Co. for all of their coffee and espresso offerings.

During the bakery’s hiatus, sibling owners Evrim and Evin Dogu, had the opportunity to go on a bakery tour of the west coast. While Evin Dogu focused on pastries in San Francisco, her brother, Evrim, visited nearly half a dozen wood fired bread operations up the coast. Evrim maintains that back in Richmond, the changes will be subtle: “Essentially, we want to pick up where we left off with Sub Rosa, but it was both valuable and inspiring to see the way different bakers are pushing themselves out there.”

*Sub Rosa’s hours will then continue to be as follows:
Monday: Closed / Tuesday­Friday: 7am ­ 6pm / Saturday & Sunday: 9am ­ 5pm
