Take a second to request a trash can for Marshall Street
A neighbor is reporting via SeeClickFix that the trash cans have disappeared from the bus stop at 31st and Marshall over a year ago, and that this has been a messy problem. Go and click to vote for this issue and let’s see what we can get accomplished:
These trash cans were never replaced and this corner (close to two convenience stores and a well-used bus stop) continues to be a huge problem. Bottles, cans, plastic bans often end up on the sidewalk, in the street, and on adjacent properties.
Periodically, neighbors place city super cans, bags for the trash, plastic trash cans and people use them. This suggests to me that a trash can would be used and better still a recycling can/trash combo.
I understand that the city did not want to replace the metal can as it was probably stolen by recyclers, but it’s an important and well-used corner. How about repurposing an underused solar compactor (the one at 25th and E. Broad comes to mine)?

Yikes! I did the click fix about this problem and received a reply that was little short of rude. It said the civic association should purchase a permanent can for $800 and then the city would install it for $400. They gave me the total of $1200, Just in case I wasn’t bright enough to add the total. Also said they were not going to put out any more $125 wire cans because people steal them. Also said businesses were responsible for any trash their customers generated. Wouldn’t that mean that GRTC is responsible for trash at the stops?
@3 I have to agree, GRTC would appear responsible for trash at bus stops. And also agree that the response was short of rude.
Anyone working for GRTC reading this? If so please respond with something a little more constructive, thanks in advance.
Well, that is ridiculous. That means that any corner is a poor area should remain trashy and polluted. I question the city’s response. I do not think GRTC is responsible, though. We need to get our council rep involved. They should be able to spend some money on a trash can – especially considering the questionable use of city funds on other projects.
I think I need to go in the buisness of supplying and installing trash cans for the city……

We could all pitch in $5 and get one of these shipped for $150, and heck ill install it for free. I live a block away.

Scott, I agree with your proposition but have one question: will the city empty it if we install it and they have said they don’t want one there? And how do we keep it from being stolen? I’m thinking we make an agreement with the metal recyclers over on Hull St., that if they get one they refuse to buy it and keep it and call someone, but not sure how practical that is.
There is a nice, new combo recycling/solar compactor trashcan on the sidewalk in front of the SunTrust Bank on Broad St at 25th St. It’s part of the RVA Green Program. Should we ask for one of those?
@9, well it might be a little harder to steal one of those. And it might not be worth stealing, if the metal recycling people won’t take it. I still have a problem with the city’s response but why don’t you call public works and see if you can get someone responsive on the phone to talk about it? Maybe that would be more productive, I’m not sure. You could try 646-0999 and get connected from there, it’s a general customer service number that I’ve used in the past.
Hi all – I’m the one who has reported this issue twice and both times suggested a relocation of the solar compactor. Most of the “trash” is actually recyclable. If the city won’t fix this, I’m calling the media. I’m sick of looking at (and picking up) the trash and feel very bad for the folks living adjacent to the bus stop. People have contributed plastic fans which don’t always get emptied, hung bags on their fences (which get used), and for a while we had a supercan done there that the city trash people relocated. Not replacing cabs is such bs. Thanks to John for posting and to all of you who are helping my crusade!
