John Shuck will be working at East End Cemetery if anyone is interested in joining him.
East End Cemetery has been officially declared abandoned by Henrico county, and is as equally overgrown as the adjacent Evergreen Cemetery.
There are four contiguous cemeteries in the area east of Oakwood Cemetery known as the “Four Cemeteries at Evergreen”: Evergreen, East End Cemetery, Oakwood Colored Section, and Colored Pauper’s Cemetery. East End Cemetery is or was the final resting place for several notable Richmond area African-Americans such as Rosa Bowser and Virginia Randolph.

In addition, the City’s Neighbor-to-Neighbor (N2N) Initiative, in partnership with AmeriCorps ACES, Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, and New Jubilee Heroes and Dreams will be hosting a “Servicing the Dream” program from 10:00 – noon at the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club at 3701 R Street. The event will feature Paul Manning, the City’s Chief Service Officer, as keynote speaker to be followed by a dynamic group discussion on the importance of volunteerism.
“The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal holiday is a time for us to remember Dr. King’s legacy and what he stood for,” commented Mayor Dwight C. Jones. “This day is an opportunity for us to give back to our community and help keep his dream alive.”
Beginning at noon, AmeriCorps, ACES members and University of Richmond students will provide maintenance work at the Boys and Girls Club. The volunteer day also involves students from the Richmond Preparatory Christian Academy who will help with outside yard work for seniors and persons with disabilities in the 7th District.
Registration for “Servicing the Dream” begins at 9:30 AM. Contact Jennifer.Swinson@RichmondGov.com to RSVP.
