A block of Venable Street then and now
01/20/2014 2:56 PM by John M
The south side of Venable Street between Jessamine and 23rd Streets was a beautiful mess back in 2004. Two of the house had no roofs, you could see sky through the windows.
I took photos of the houses thinking that they had to either be fixed up or demolished, but knew that they couldn’t stay like they were.
The house on the east end of the block was being renovated in 2006 when it got hit by a car, collapsing the front of the building.
All of the “then” photos are dated by year, the “now” photos are from this morning.

Brings back fond memories!
What a change! I think fairly soon Venable is going to be a great looking street on several other blocks as well.
In short order the new restaurant at 23rd and Cedar will open (July 2014). After that, Ann will fill her storefront in the previously collapsed building (above). The renovation of the frame houses on the west end of Venable will spur renovation eastward … and before long Citadel of Hope will be sold and repurposed. Isaiah 55:11
Great to see this transformation in my old neighborhood.
Venable Street is Next.
Please let us not forget the blight of a building occupied by homeless on the opposite side of this street and the known drug house on the corner of Venable and Jessamine.
John you should have given me some warning before coming to photograph, I would have finally trashed my old dresser! You might be interested to know that 2225-2229 are all occupied by me and my friends. We love living on Venable Street, we’re so close to ABC #187, I never wanna move anywhere else in town again!
I like it when people reconstructing houses replace the proper original Soffit, Fascia and Freeze decorations and designs back instead of cheating and leave a plain board in its place or use cheap off the shelf junk. I see most here have done that. Adds character.
*done that as in done the correct replacement.
Has anyone noticed that Venable is starting to look a little better these days? And there is so much more coming!
