Franklin Cadet wins regional writing contest
Jocelyn Lee, a sophomore at Franklin Military Academy, was recognized as the Central Regional winner of the 2014 Strong Men & Women in Virginia History Student Writing Contest.
The annual contest is part of Dominion Virginia Power and the Library of Virginia’s Strong Men & Women in Virginia History black history month program recognizing outstanding African-American leaders in Virginia. High school students in Virginia were invited to submit 400-word essays about an issue or problem keeping their communities from achieving its full potential.
Lee is one of four students in Virginia to win this year’s award. Her winning essay suggested more positive thinking is needed to improve the community. “Anyone can be a winner,” Lee wrote. “But it’s your state of mind that will take you across the finish line.”
As part of her award, Lee will receive a laptop computer and a $1,000 cash prize for her school. Her essay is attached below.
