Cycling Championships will climb Libby Hill
The World Road Cycling Championships are coming to Richmond for eight days in September 2015, and the most spectacular part of the Road Circuit course may just be Libby Hill. The Elite riders will get as far north into the neighborhood as Broad Street, and will climb both the cobblestones of Libby Hill and the steep hill at 23rd Street next to Bellevue Elementary.
The same courses will be used this May for the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships.
The World Road Cycling Championships is cycling’s pinnacle event, held annually in an international city as chosen by the Union Cycliste Internationale through a competitive bidding process similar to the Olympic Games. The nine-day event features 12 Championship races, with World Champions crowned in each discipline.
When the race comes to Richmond in 2015 it will be covered by more than 500 media outlets from around the world and broadcast live to a global audience of more than 300 million people.
Wonder if the tour bus will also try again to climb the hill?
Cycling is about the worst spectator sport around but I’m still excited. Progress is progress and it’s good to see the city doing things to give people a reason to see downtown.
That said, I was hoping to see the circuit that ran through all of Richmond’s projects and am a bit disappointed that didn’t materialize.
Jefferson Park should afford a decent view of the Elite race, at minimum.
They’ll also climb the “death hill” that leads up to the Pub! I can’t wait to stand at the top to cheer people on as they bike up that incline. I’ve walked it and driven it, and both my car and I have learned to respect how steep it is! 🙂

When the last bike race came up Libby Hill, it was an incredible site. The hill to those guys was nothing.
There was lots of banging and rubbing up the hill.
When they came around the statue, several were too fast and missed the turn and had to jump on the sidewalk. People and pets scattered like cockroaches when the light turns on.
Ii is really great to watch these cyclists tackle the hills of pain… looking like a coast to some of them. Amazing.
