A curious incident on Broad Street

RVA Magazine has the story of a strange accident over the weekend:
There was a loud automobile collision on the 3000 block of E. Broad St. early Sunday at 12:30am. The witness ran outside to find an individual in a small SUV had hit an oncoming motorist, after which he had hit another parked car while attempting to park backwards. At that point, unable to drive further, he was apprehended by Richmond Police Officers. That is where the story gets really interesting. We received this account and a video from an eyewitness who was one of several witnesses to the scene

So, a cop’s daughter (or someone with obvious pull with the police) can drive drunk and not get picked up? Is that the moral of this story? Sounds like it to me. Anyone else have a different take? I don’t get ticked off at a lot of things, but this one does make me a little….. irritated, if not just downright angry. As in ticked off. Sheez.

“In reference to cell phone video of part of an incident that occurred this weekend in Church Hill, the Richmond Police Department would like the public to know that Internal Affairs detectives are aware of the incident and are investigating to determine exactly what happened.
They are in the very early stages of the investigation, and anyone with any information about this incident may contact them at 646-6816.
Gosh, can we find out if she’s single? She seems like a real catch!
Seriously, though, this is sketchy beyond belief. I’m glad RPD is investigating. No reason the media can’t help out with an investigation of their own, too.

She ought to be arrested and her father should lose his job. Corruption by those in positions of power is out of control.

The NBC station has a segment on this at 11 pm tonight. Church Hill makes the news yet again looking all crack ass crazy. Yea.

on 12 news last night they said that the license plate of the man’s truck did not belong to any city police officer but that it could belong to a county or other officer. they are still investigating.
Makes you wonder what else you could get away with – maybe try your hand at shoplifting next time, secure that your father, a bent cop, will come to your rescue. If RPD doesn’t burn this officer down for such egregious abuse of his power there should be a tsunami of outrage. Even the rest of the police department should be upset that their judgement, morals and oath of office are called into question.
WTVR also reported on this story last night, and they can confirm that the man in the video is NOT a Richmond police officer. But, I think it’s safe to say he is the girl’s father. The glaring questions are why would police on the scene agree to take a private call from ‘Daddy’ and then just let him show up and whisk her away? No matter what they say, there were numerous witnesses on the scene that thought she was drunk – or at least obviously impaired… so the cops there just ignored this and let her go. I think KAAATIE and her family might be striking back a bit as well… the last part of Jon Burkett’s story last night was that the witness who posted this video to YouTube got an email from YouTube Support. It was notifying them that YouTube had received a privacy complaint about the video from an ‘individual’. Interesting. She drives messed up, causing folks to run for the sidewalk, gets loud and crazy, is obviously messed up but is still allowed to leave. In this day and age it is nearly impossible to get away with such bizarre behavior in public as everyone has a cell phone. The cops let her go, but thanks to the neighbors on the scene, the cat’s out of the bag and the court of public opinion is weighing in. Here’s hoping they can actually get to the bottom of this.

I saw this happen as well and you people are assuming a LOT. Ever been in a car crash or had a close call? Guess what? YOU’RE FREAKED OUT. People handle freaking out differently. When I had a close call a few years ago I was dropping my purse all over the place too and trying to get out of my car while a Chesterfield County cop was yelling at me to stay in–and I hadn’t had a drop. Why didn’t she get a breathalyzer? Probably the officer didn’t smell alcohol. You don’t know that her father is a cop. The only things she’s guilty of right now is being mouthy, not paying attention to the road and having a kind of dumb license plate.
@21 – that might explain the weird behavior afterwards but to blow through a couple stop signs and just miss all that traffic? There’s gotta be something else besides nerves.
I agree that she was driving recklessly and probably gave a few folks a scare by her negligence. Near collisions can freak anyone out. As for her father or whatever relation they have, calling for him to be fired is a bit much. It appears that she deserves a ticket of some sort but I don’t know a parent out there that wouldn’t run to the rescue of their child. He reacted to a random call in the middle of the night and tried to protect her, not truly knowing the situation. No one should be fired for that intention, whether he pulled a few strings or not. The police on the scene already had to handle one situation so quelling another one of possibly just an hysterical driver was probably in their best interest.
@21, according to the accompanying story, she also was driving at a high rate of speed, ran the stop sign, ignored the wrecked car by swerving around it, and ignored the police car with flashing lights, only stopping because an officer told her to at that point. Sure, I’m not qualified at this point to say if she was drunk or impaired, but I’d say there was something going on there. At the very least, she should have been ticketed for running a stop sign (as so many of us were a year or so ago up here), and at the most, she should have had a sobriety test to see why she was driving so fast and ran the stop sign to say nothing of the other issues. I just watched the video, it’s kind of dark but with the accompanying text it gets much clearer.
Also, I note that in the comments section of the story you get if you click on the link in this story (where it says ‘we received this account and a video’), someone says that she repeatedly saw the same car speeding in the Carver area. Kind of hard to miss a vanity plate like that, and there can only be one plate like it, they don’t make matching plates for two cars….given that she was seen in Carver, maybe her daddy is a VCU cop. I just hope that this eventually gets some resolution. Started to say justice, but as someone else pointed out it’s too late to get her for DUI.

churchhilldenizen IF the father is a police officer, he must follow a strict code of ethics. His daughter was not at risk of being hurt (by anyone else at least), nor was her life in danger, so I think you’re giving him a little too much credit here with that fatherly intention angle. He interrupted police business & pulled strings to protect her CRIMINAL RECORD that you & I would not be entitled to.
IF this is the case, then all invovled parties should be disciplined (KAAATIE, Cop Daddy, as well as the cops on-scene) up to & including termination. Ironically, KAAATIE, who deserves it most, will walk away from this in the best shape of anyone.
Internal Affairs is involved. So, if it was an innocent “freaked out after accident” type thing, this will be released soon.
Otherwise, my guess is that her daddy is someone with a lot of pull in city hall. Someone who can call the police chief or the mayor personally.

What kind of additional help does RPD need?
They would know “Kaatie” by running the license plate and presumably the officers at the scene would know who Dad in the yellow hoodie is — I mean, they did let Kaaatie leave with the guy.

Agree with Ray and Clay St res, @31 and 32. @30, the general public cannot access DMV records or any registration info. However, the cops can and hopefully have.
To all who witnessed it, I really hope you get in touch with the RPD at the number they listed in the Facebook posting.
lets not get ahead of this and make a huge deal about it and move on. There are bigger issues in our community and we need RPD on our side.
Lets see how fast they respond to situation next time you give them a call.
So you’re advocating ignoring corruption by the police, in fear that they won’t do their job in retaliation?
There seems to be a mob mentality forming around this and that’s never a good thing! I am sure the police are doing their jobs and whether or not they post about it on this blog, I am sure there will be charges.

Hey Trish. Go blow through a couple stop signs, act a fool, and then ask the cops to talk to your daddy on the phone. See how that goes for you. I’d bet you don’t get the “discretion” shown by these officers. Get over yourself.
To all of you who seem almost ready to lynch the girl, she did just run a stop sign and behave a bit erratically. Life is not fair, and there isn’t one of you who wouldn’t call your dad, mom, etc. if in trouble and needed help. There may be some of you who do not have anyone to help you, but it doesn’t warrant being jealous of someone who does.
I used to call my dad in college a lot when cops stopped me, and I never got a ticket. However, I did remain calm until my dad arrived unlike this girl. I totally agree with Churchhilldenizen there isn’t one of you who would not try to help your child. Let us please get away from acting as if we are perfect and would never behave in an illegal manner.
I will write it repeatedly in blogs …life is not fair and it never will be. the Police officer, contractor (whoever her father is) will always try helping his daughter. If any of you who have children would not try helping your child in a sticky situation, I can only have one opinion of you. In addition, it is not anything I would be comfortable calling you here.

Begs the question: what happens if you are the child of absent parents/poor parents/parents who are working the night shift and can’t leave to come pick you up?
What happens if you are black and “look” like someone who is up to something? Does that mean you deserve to get arrested for erratic behavior, as opposed to someone who has the support system to help them walk away from the situation? You think a young black male would have gotten treated the same way?
Can’t we call this what this is: white privilege?
The point I want to make here is: just because one benefits from white privilege doesn’t mean one is a racist, but not acknowledging it at all is pretty willfully blind. Come on, people.
Bill 3, if the cops could talk to my dad they’d better take their show on the road because being able to talk to the dead is a rare gift.
Here’s another question–does anyone know the color of the guy that was taken into custody? Because in Clay Street’s mind, surely if he were white he would have gotten out of being taken to jail because only black males get busted around here.
There is a difference between “being in trouble & needing help” and finding yourself being questioned by police for breaking the law. I am a fully-grown, adult male human. If I find myself in this situation, I don’t call my parents. I apologize profusely & do what I’m told. Of course before this – I make sure I’m not breaking the law to begin with.
If the first reaction in this situation is to call daddy, I say daddy isn’t doing his job as a parent. Sure this little situation might get swept under ther rug, but the behavior is further enabled. Eventually – she’ll find herself in a position daddy can’t easily clean up.
Luckily – zero craps are given to what El thinks of me. You raise a bunch of immature brats who run to their parents at the first sign of trouble. I’ll raise children that are smart enough not to put themselves in sticky situations to begin with.
