At MLK, cheerleading is not just a sport – it’s a serious matter! Coach Loretta Watson’s squad mesmerizes crowds during halftime of the boys and girls games. When basketball season ends, the squad stays active with community service and travel, including their annual visit to the CIAA “Super Saturday” to watch the cheer expo and meet college cheerleaders.

In recent months the squad cheered during the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new MLK building, for Mayor Jones’ “State of the City Address”, and will again be inspiring runners as part the Monument Avenue 10k Spirit Contest. To cap off an outstanding season, the MLK Titan Cheerleaders won 1st place in the inaugural RPS Middle Cchool Cheerleading Competition held at Armstrong High School in February.

In February, Coach Justin Wingfield’s Boys Basketball team advanced to the final game of the playoffs and brought home the 2nd place trophy for the 2nd year in a row.

Under the guidance of coach Wallesha Tennessee, the team went 11-2 and won their end-of-season tournament. As 6th and 7th graders, this team had made it to the semifinals. With discipline, dedication and growth, the graduating 8th grade class claimed the 2013-2014 season championship. After missing 4 games due to injury, team captain Rayne Hood was able to rejoin the team for the championship game where the Lady Titans beat previously undefeated Albert Hill Middle School. Taitonia Owens was names the game’s MVP.
