Mexican Cookout fundraiser for Church Hill Academy prom

Do you live within 50 square miles of Richmond? Do you like Mexican food? Do you want to help a bunch of amazing students at Church Hill Academy fund their prom? Are you breathing?
If you answered yes to any of these, then you should stop by the corner of 31st and N street for some fun and grub.
Tell your friends. Tell your enemies so that they will become your friends.
Mexican cookout? And here I thought I was the only Mexican in Church Hill. I assume that means there will be Mexicans cooking real Mexican food like I make and my mama makes and my abuelita makes, not a bunch of americans stuffing ground beef in tostada shells and calling it a taco? And God I hope not wearing those tacky straw sombreros and singing La Cucaracha, which by the way is about weed. Keep it classy, Church Hill Academy! Good luck to the kids, though.
Somebody’s grouchy today. It’s not exactly breaking news that America has invented bastardized versions of foreign cuisines. I’m pretty sure if you go to other countries they mess up “American” cuisine too. No need to get your panties all in a twist about a charity event.
One way to guarantee that would be to volunteer.

I hope the food is “bastardized”. Having spent a considerable amount of time in Texas and Arizonia, eating “authentic” Mexican food, I can state with a certain amount of authority that the “bastardized” stuff is more palatable. My Grandmother used to make the BEST biscuits and always used lard which is a mainstay of “authentic” Mexican cooking. Read the label on a can of authentic refried beans. LARD LARD LARD!
I thought La Cucaracha was a song about those large, deep fried cocaroaches served on a stick. They DO NOT taste like chicken. And have you ever tasted iguana?
Well, I have to go now and find my large straw hat!

Ok so you all won’t mind if my familia has a white people cook out or a black people cook out to raise money for Mexican students. Good. No matter how many decades my family has been here – with “papers” – the culture of my heritage is still exploited for American gains. If you like Mexican cookouts so much do something good for the Mexican community. Ok I’ll see you at the Garcia Family White BBQ and Black Soul Food fundraiser.
Oh yeah – and I would volunteer if they bothered to ask the local people of Mexican descent instead of “bastardizing” my culture and cuisine as Alex said.
If you’re not Mexican – which your name indicates that you are not – you have no authority to state anything about my heritage. Americanized ‘Mexican’ food has no taste except salt and (sometimes) spice. We use lots of fresh spices and vegetables that you have never even heard of. The point is not which is better, though. We will all disagree about the best cuisine because we all have a different taste preference. the point is that nobody should be calling something ‘Mexican’ that is NOT Mexican in any way and is exploited for American profit with no benefit to the Mexican community.

It depends on who the white or black person is. Cooking on the grill requires skill and you have to know your meat. Being part Cherokee, I would like to see ALL of Andrew Jackson’s decendants grilled.

@7 – I’m not arguing that what passes for Mexican food in America is anywhere near authentic. I’ve had food in Mexico and it’s a world of difference. But is a cookout for a charity really the place to make your point?
Not to be rude but a.) you’re not going to change the abuse of inaccurate geographic labels singlehandedly, b.) most people are well aware that it’s not authentic and c.) at this point the designation “Mexican food” now generally is used as shorthand to describe American style Mexican inspired. If someone served authentic Mexican without warning folks they’d actually have a lot of sad customers.
It’s also funny you should mention “white people” and “black people” food as if “white” and “black” were some monolithic group. Where do “white people” and “black people” come from? I’m not aware of a single country whose cuisine is accurately reflected here in the US so chances are they also have their mother cuisine imitated here.
If it tastes good eat it…

Please name one herb, spice, or vegetable I have never heard of, grown or eaten!
Based on your logic there shoud not be any Mexican, Italian, Jewish, Greek, French, Russian, Nigerian or any other resturaunt that does not directly benefit those “cultures”
I have lived (and eaten ) in the Middle East, Africa, France, Greece, Italy, Egypt, Germany, Switzerland, Great Britain most of the United States and of course Church Hill. In each country/region, I made it a point to learn how to prepare the local cusine and understand the ingrediants. i have never before encountered this limited thought process.
Maybe I am missing what you are trying to say. I truley do not understand.

Well said. I have clearly been wasting my humour on this one and perhaps humour is missplaced here. For Miss Garcia, this issue is serious disrespect of her culture.
