Tyler Potterfield RIP

Tyler Potterfield, city planner and historian and author and bicyclist, passed away Friday morning.
Tyler’s work has been an inspiration to CHPN since very early on. His 2009 book Nonesuch Place: A History of the Richmond Landscape is essential Richmond reading.
He will be greatly missed in this city.

So sad. He’s been a big influence, always ready to lend a helpful ear whenever I needed a question answered. Well wishes to those hearts he touched along the way and now, leave behind to mend.

Prayers to Maura, family and friends. Tyler was a good man and will be very much missed by everyone he touched.
The Union Hill Old & Historic District would not have been possible without Tyler. He was a tireless friend of the East End and preservationist. We owe him a debt of gratitude.

He was a true gentle-man.
This is shocking. I just saw him a few days ago. My condolences to his family.
Though he and I did not see eye-to-eye about various structures and only personally met him once which was not a good experience, I do have to say he will be missed. It is so sudden and a great loss of a historian.
I had just started to work on a project with Tyler and am very sorry now that I won’t have the opportunity to work with him and get to know him. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
We are both at a lost for words. Our hearts are broken and our thoughts and prayers are with Maura, family, and with the Planning Department.
Saddened. A decent, caring guy who loved the city. A loss for us all.
I had the pleasure of working with Tyler for many years and I am saddened to hear the this news. My heartfelt condolences to his wife, family and City of Richmond Planning staff.
Tyler Potterfield, in his fine and quiet way contributed very generously of his expertise and time to the RIce House project at the Science Museum of Virginia, We will be forever grateful for his service, and I personally cherish the book he inscribed and gave to me. Tyler was a rare and gifted person, who will be greatly missed. Our hearts ache for his family and close friends and we wish them all the strength and courage they will need in the time to come.
