City seeking feedback on Bike Master Plan
Via Jakob Helmboldt, the Pedestrian, Bicycle and Trails Coordinator for the City of Richmond:
Good afternoon, I’m excited to announce that the City’s Bike Master Plan is finally nearing completion. We have been working with the consultant team to develop a route network of proposed bikeways throughout the City and we are now opening that up for public review and comment. An online interactive map has been created which allows users to log comments and suggested edits, the link to which is below. We will also have an open house at the Carillon on Wednesday, May 14 to present the network maps and recommendations (see the information below).
The network recommendations will serve as the blueprint moving forward so we need stakeholders to provide critical feedback on the recommendations. Please read the instructions, particularly related to turning off others’ comments so that you can navigate the map. Also if you can’t see the whole screen you can use the scroll bars on the bottom and right. The map allows you to pinpoint specific locations as well as draw actual routes and provide comments associated with them. In particular we need to hear from people regarding:
- Route recommendations – Did we capture the right streets/corridors? Did we miss critical streets or destinations? Remember that this is limited to the City of Richmond.
- Problem locations – Are there any particularly bad intersections or segments that we need to address?
- Facility type – the legend shows the types of facilities that have been proposed. Please help us determine if the recommended infrastructure is appropriate for that route. The wiki map has a link to images of examples of different types of bikeways for your reference.

The City, in partnership with Sports Backers’ Bike Walk RVA initiative, will be hosting a Bike Master Plan Open House on May 14 at the Carillon in Byrd Park. This interactive forum will provide attendees an opportunity to engage in roundtable discussions with group facilitators to help us make refinements to the draft bikeways network. Help us make this the best plan it can possibly be!
