Tricycle Gardens’ Healthy Corner Store Program will be expanding to two more stores in the East End this month.

On Friday, June 20th, come out and celebrate at Song’s Market (1400 Mechanicsville Turnpike) from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM and at Fine Foods (4904 Government Road) from 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM.

Each event will feature a cooking demonstration in Bon Secours Virginia Health System’s Class-A-Roll by Chris Blain, Executive Chef of the
Governor’s Mansion, and Youth Health Equity Leadership Institute Students (YHELI). Learn how to prepare a delicious, healthful and affordable meal with ingredients found at these local markets. There will also be information on healthy eating, activities and games for children and music provided by Radio One.

The events are free and open to the public.

“Richmond’s East End is one of the largest urban food deserts in the United States.” Sally Schwitters, Executive Director of Tricycle Gardens, explains, “The Healthy Corner Store Initiative provides one solution to this problem by getting fresh, healthy foods right where people do their daily shopping, and then teaching folks quick, easy and affordable ways to prepare and enjoy these foods.”

Richmond’s 7th District Councilwoman Cynthia Newbille stated, “Health outcomes are directly and negatively impacted by a lack of regular access to healthy foods. However, healthy choices can only be made in communities where there are healthy options. Having access to wholesome, local foods can help people eat better, feel better and have better health outcomes.”
