Dog-friendly restaurant patios in Richmond
06/09/2014 5:26 PM by John M
Richmond foodie blog Grub Like a Girl has a great list of dog-friendly restaurant patios around town, including Alamo BBQ, Union Marker, GlobeHopper, and 23rd & Main Taproom at Sette.
Dig into the Grub archives for words on local favorites like Alamo BBQ, Anthony’s on the Hill, The Hill Cafe, and The Roosevelt.
I love dogs but come on people, don’t assume everyone wants to eat around your dog.
C’mon people, leave your dog at home when you go out to eat. And, while you’re at it, leave your dog on a leash at Libby Hill Park, k thanks it’s a law.
If my dog is well-trained, what’s the harm in having him sit at our feet on a nice day outdoors? BAC & Brix Baxter – don’t assume I want to eat around you. Gosh people will complain about anything.
Does Globehopper allow dogs now? Years ago, I was out on a super long hike with my dog and wanted to have an ice coffee on their patio with my dog and they wouldn’t let me. I’ve never been back and not because I’m the sort of person who takes my dog everywhere, but because it was kind of ridiculous to make me drink my coffee on the street instead of letting me sit down with my leashed dog for 5 minutes.
@5 – some folks are allergic to dogs, some are scared of dogs and some just find having animals around while they are eating to be kind of gross. I’m not in any those camps personally but there are valid concerns.
Does anyone know if these places allow all dogs (well behaved of course) or do they restrict breeds?
There’s an anthropological link to the survival and success of humans and canines and the evolution of the relationship. Anthropomorphism aside the health of our species and individual health are proven to be better with dogs in our lives, it’s science. You may have your preferences and are entitled to them. It’s a business decision that is likely a benefit to allow dogs outside. I don’t care to fly or dine out with children but I don’t complain about it. (and before the chides on comparing kids and dogs begin; yes I have raised a child and practiced what I preach).
Alex – The only concern I’d say is valid is allergies, & that can be solved by, you know, being normal people & finding an amicable compromise (i.e., sitting a little further away). If it’s outdoors, as most if not all of these places are, I can’t imagine allergies would be a concern unless you are right on top of said party. Scared or grossed out by dogs? That’s a you-problem (not you, but whomever). Don’t go to places where dogs are welcome.
The blanket sentiment of keep your dog at home is one I’ll fight every time. Maybe leave your stuffy attitude at home instead.
I have been taking my dogs to Carrytown Burgers patio for over a decade. So its dog friendly.
We are talking about outdoor seating, dogs would not add any allergens that aren’t already there. I think it’s great in patio setting!
#9 is right on with science. The newly domesticated dog was crucial to aiding early man in tracking and hunting and later as transportation (dog sleds). Studies have also shown that kids that have contact with dogs from infancy develop fewer allergies and have over all healthier immune systems. I’ve had my dog since before my children were born so they have been with her since day one. My 3 year old has never had to go to the doctor outside I regular check-ups. Never had an ear infection (knock on wood).
Children are way grosser than dogs. The baby drools more than the Rottweiler. The dog is also calmer, quieter and usually listens better.
I’m all for dogs on patios if they are well behaved and don’t cause a ruckus. Plus I LOVE the chance to meet a friendly dog and maybe even the neighbor that is attached to it. 🙂
If it’s that bad to have a dog sit next to you on the patio, just go and eat inside.
As long as it’s leached and friendly, it doesn’t bother me none!
Poe’s Pub allows dogs outside. The servers often bring bowls of ice water for the dogs.
What I don’t like are the owners who think it is funny to get a dog howling or barking. Please human leave and let the dog enjoy the evening in peace.
RVAtransplant – you’re in Church Hill now. We don’t do breed discrimination here, at least not of canines. Welcome to the neighborhood!!
Those opposed (outside of allergies) are not true pet lovers. For many of us who have 4-legged babies feel differently and a\not opposed to pet friendly restaurants. By the way, when we go to our mountain home there is a well known and visited hot dog stand we go to who always gives us a free plain ones already cut up for our dogs. And a drive in also there who is also pet friendly and gives out dog biscuits at the cashier booth. 🙂
Kathleen Sanders, I like your sentiments.
The only think I have to voice is the fact that some (gladly the majority of dog owners do) don’t pick up poop especially along sidewalk trees where people parallel park. Keep in mind that there are city codes and this is actually illegal carrying a $120.00 fine. When not disposed of, pet waste seeps into rivers and contaminates our drinking water.
We welcome respectful dog companions and their canine friends on the patio at GlobeHopper. However, due to health code regs, your dog friends must remain outside when you order.
Here’s the kicker for the restaurant owner. We used to allow dogs, but one bit another customer. Now we cannot due to insurance. Not everyone’s dog is good or predictable, tough to tell.
I have to add to the kid vs. dog part of the conversation…. My husband and I were in carrytown at a restaurant where three little boys had a screaming contest for over an hour…. I finally got up the nerve to ask the waitress if she could do something and she yelled at me for not understanding how a five year old behaves. Also, it was not my business… Compare that to my Dog who never barks and was by my side the entire time, (we were on a patio). I just can’t understand why we allow children but have to fight to bring our dogs. I personally think children should be left at home not the dogs. Children are loud, messy, and cause problems for other diners… My dog is quiet, no mess and causes cuteness. And before someone says babies are cute… I say not when they are loud or causing drama. Maybe restaurants should ban children not dogs, even have a age minimum for kids. Just a thought.
The reason not all places allow dogs is because of the OWNERS. Its the same reason why pit pulls have such a bad name- the owners. A lot of people have dogs for the wrong reason, especially pit bulls. What is the worst a kid could do in a restaurant? And what would it take for a restaurant to ban kids from its doors? One dog bite, or one big dog brawl (or even the risk there of) prevents stores from opening its doors to dogs.
Another huge thing is for sanitary reasons. Most kids have diapers. Most dogs do not!
Burgerworks also welcomes dogs on their patio. 🙂
Jack Brown’s has an all breed friendly patio.
